Review: Excellent midrange bass! - You can stop looking. If you're ready to graduate from the $150-250 beginner range but don't think you're yet ready to drop a grand on a bass, this is the one. Hell, you don't even really need to drop more on one, this is flexible enough for anything you need. Looked and felt great right out of the box. Only a very minor truss adjustment to correct a little fret buzz and I was off to the races. From this price point on up, you'd be wise to take it to a luthier (most guitar shops will have one on staff) to get it adjusted just to make sure it's in top shape, if you haven't done it yourself. You can learn to adjust (it isn't difficult) but it isn't very expensive to have it done for you, either. The active/passive pickup is a great addition and worth the step up from the 304. Once I started using it, I'm not sure how I was able to do without it for so long. The back of the body has an LED battery warning indicator so you won't be caught flat-footed with a dead battery when you're in active mode. It does automatically switch over to passive when it loses power, though. Don't take the missing fifth star as criticism. I only use five stars for above and beyond. Take the fours as ringing endorsements. To address the categories desertcart asked about: As far as for beginners, you can find less expensive basses in the $150-200 range, this might be a little pricey for someone's first instrument. The TRBX174 at about $229 (they're still widely available as of April 2021) might suit the absolute beginner a little better at a much lower price point. That said, you definitely can't go wrong with this one if the money isn't a concern. Craftsmanship is top notch. This bass is made in Indonesia. I was a little squirrelly, but the construction is top notch and I found nothing to complain about. I couldn't find any obvious flaws, and it looks, feels, and plays great. No cheap construction materials here. It was perfectly tuned and had only minor fret buzz out of the box, something common with any bass. One quick adjustment and we're off. Versatility is the best I've experienced so far. It works great in the basement, studio or stage. I mostly use it for practice and home use, but it's stood up to everything I've thrown at it. I've tried to find limitations but haven't found any. The active/passive option is something I didn't think about when I ordered; I'd never played with it before. But now that I have it it's like adding a fifth gear, I notice its absence when I'm playing any of my other basses. In short: this is your sign that this is the bass for you.
Review: Great sounding classic electric bass - I'm not sure how many stars to give... The delivery was a bit botched, but the bass itself is excellent. Evidently there was a mixup between Austin Bazaar and FedEx. The tracking number was issued at 10:45 one morning., but the package wasn't picked up by FedEx until 5:00 p.m. the next day, resulting in my bass being delivered a day late. The bass was double-boxed. The outer box was immaculate, the inner box (from Yamaha) was pretty torn up, but the bass itself was fine. My bass is a lot darker than the photos on the website, almost black. The lighter sunburst color is really only visible under the strings. I wish that weren't the case, but it's still a pretty instrument. I suppose that it's the luck of the draw, and for an inexpensive instrument, I shouldn't complain too loudly. When it arrived, the strings were so slack that my tuner couldn't register the notes. I tuned it and played for a few minutes, then was called away for an hour. When I got back to it, all the strings were a bit flat. Over the next day or two this continued, with the strings a little less flat each time, so evidently, they'd never been brought up to proper tension. I think that's a good thing, the strings should last me longer. The last couple of days it's stayed in tune, so the tuners weren't slipping. As far as I can tell, the neck is straight and the bass is intonated well. I'm waiting for a gig bag to be delivered, then I'll have it properly set up by a guitar tech. I'm a guitar player who decided to try bass. A couple of years ago, I bought a Rumble 40 amp and an Ibanez Mikro (short scale bass) because its scale length isn't much longer than a guitar. Gig bags, straps, storage racks, and etc. for use with a guitar work well with it and it's inexpensive. I enjoyed playing it, but there was an indefinable something missing from its sound. I decided that I might like to take bass lessons and wanted to learn on a regular size bass, so I spent a couple of weeks researching them before deciding on this one. I've only been playing the Yamaha a few days, but I really like its sounds. I'm 70 years old, and like old music. I don't play slap bass, rap, hip hop, reggae, or etc., so I can't comment on how useful it is for those styles. For 1950s-1970s-style country and pop, its everything I could wish for. Many basses power on an active circuit when you plug in the instrument cable. I'm in the habit of leaving the cable plugged into an instrument when putting it back into the rack, so I didn't want a bass which would drain a battery if I did that. This bass has passive pickups (like the Fender P and J basses) and doesn't even have a compartment for a battery. All in all, I'm pretty happy with it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great First Bass; High Quality at a Reasonable Price Point!
*by E***N on December 11, 2025*

My first bass; arrived in excellent condition and plays great! Fit and finish is competitive with my guitars which cost double or more. Only caveat was I didn’t seem to have a battery included for the active pickups. Wasn’t a big deal for me as I had a spare 9v, but just a consideration.
