My New Favorite Strobe
I was really excited to get the AD400 Pro because I had loved using the original AD600BM and the Pro seemed like a very nice upgrade. I didnโt really need the full power of the 600 and I heard the 400 was almost as bright as the original AD600, so I decided to get this one and take advantage of the smaller size, included carrying case and exchangeable mount. Right out of the box Iโm really glad to have the carrying case, it just makes bringing it on location so much easier. Iโm also glad that everything fits back in the case after switching to the Bowens mount, even with the bulb, reflector and cap attached. Compared to the AD600, the light itself is around the same weight but I can easily grab it in one hand which I couldnโt do with the 600. That makes it much easier to carry around on set. The AD200 is also very portable of course, but the case doesnโt really fit the parts as nicely as this does, especially the flash tube, which needs to be taken out. The charger canโt fit either and I always thought that case was kind of useless- but not with the AD400 Pro. (As a side note using the AD400 with Bowens mount accessories is also much easier than with the AD200, and the color consistency is improved too.) The AD400 Pro was about 2/3 stop less powerful than my original AD600 when I tested them, but the modeling light is far brighter which is much more important for me personally. Having that modeling light is really helpful for focusing in darker scenes and I love having both full percentage control of the power as well as a proportional setting- especially useful for visualizing multiple light setups. While the original AD600 did have a TTL version, I didnโt have it. I am really glad to have that as a standard feature on the Pro model now, itโs really convenient in quick shoots or changing environments, plus the TCM function with the Xpro trigger makes setup extremely quick even without a light meter. There are tons of other small touches with a significant impact that make it a worthy upgrade as well. Thereโs the color-accurate mode, more accurate 1/10 power adjustments, slightly faster recycle times, a slightly shorter flash duration and a nice handle to help adjust the angle (this comes in extra handy since the angle adjustment is no longer clicked like the original AD600). Everything else I loved about the AD600/AD200 such as high speed sync and fairly impressive recycle times has been carried over into this, and all in all I think this is pretty much the perfect strobe and the perfect upgrade for the AD600. The AD600 Pro would only really be necessary if you find yourself always pushing the limits of the original AD600โs output or battery life, and Iโd only go down to the AD200 if you want to work more with speedlight or AD200 specific modifiers. The actual size of the AD200 could be a benefit of course but in a lot of cases it might be more trouble than itโs worth compared to the simple and robust AD400 Pro. Donโt mind the faces in the sample pictures; most of my clients donโt want their photos used for public posts, so my kids โhelpedโ me take some samples for this.

Workhorse flash that punches well above its weight class
Simply put, this flash is amazing. I've used it both inside and plugged in as well as battery powered for on-location shoots and weddings. It's not quite powerful enough to overpower the sunlight for mid-day shoots, but it's an excellent fill light for those days as well as powerful enough for use a key light in the shade.

Must use dumb trigger!
Perfect flash for shooting flambient style real estate shots. Control is amazing and you can actually go up by .1 stop increments. Powerful enough to work in full sun. Only problem was a known issue where the correct trigger for your camera causes the flash shot to shift toward yellow. I have Panasonic and canon cameras and a trigger for each so I just put the pany trigger on the canon and vice versa kinda turning it into a dumb trigger. It fires but no remote setting controls. If this is a pain for you reconsider this flash but for me the flash is always right next to me so itโs not an issue.

Awesome light, horrible battery
I purchased this in September of 2020, conducted one shoot with it, and charged it for another this week and the battery is completely unresponsive. So, so, so disappointed. Because here I go, and am purchasing another battery that hopefully will last longer than one shoot. At $170 a pop, it becomes a very expensive brick for sure. I purchased a wired studio light (another Godox 200) and it is a fantastic light that was much less than this replacement battery!

Battery life
I had very high expectations for the Godox AD400Pro based on its reputation and price point, but unfortunately my experience has been extremely disappointing. After purchasing the unit through Amazon, I used it no more than five times under normal conditions. Despite the very limited use and careful handling, the battery stopped charging completely within about a year, rendering the strobe unusable. For a professional-grade product in this price range, durability and reliability should be much better. What makes the situation more frustrating is that once the Amazon return window closed, getting support became complicated. A product marketed toward professionals should offer dependable long-term performance and accessible customer support, which in my case did not meet expectations at all. The light quality and features may be good when it works, but reliability is just as important as performance. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this product, and I would not purchase it again
