Mirror Mirror, Where is this going?
This Unfortunate Fairy Tale series began well with Unenchanted where Mina discovers that she is a descendant of the Brothers’ Grimm and cursed to live through current versions of the fairy tales or die trying. If she completes the tales, the curse if lifted and the border between the Fae kingdom and the mortal realm is closed. This book was not as much fun for several reasons. First, Mina is not behaving well in this book and part of that is because of an interesting plot twist that Mina will not always be the hero of the fairy tale. In other words, she may be the villain. Second, the budding romance goes off track and we do not know if it will stay there. Third, the tone is darker. The battle to lift the curse is more difficult when powerful Fae are actively trying to defeat or kill you. The pacing is brisk, and the pages turn quickly. As the story evolved in this book, it seemed like my expectations from Enchanted had to be adjusted to accept the shift. I will read more in this series to see where it is going. The book is not inappropriate for young adult readers. They will get more out of it if they are familiar with the fairy tale stories. So far, the series is solid, but not as good as many young adult books such as, The Namesake or The Legendary Inge by Kate Stradling, Skyward by Brandon Sanderson, or The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner.

teen fantasy: Mina survived a few stories, now there's a bigger challenge with more to lose
In Short: Mina so far has survived the Grimm curse. Living through numerous fairy tales is tougher than you might think. She is determined though. If she doesn't, it will move on to the next descendant. Her little brother Charlie. She is still disappointed and hurt from the abrupt ending of her relationship with Brody. Mina barely notices as people in town start disappearing. After all, she herself just survived a few nights lost in the woods. No thanks to Jared. A not-so-little nudge from Ever, a tragic accident and a meeting with a different kind of Fae drive Mina to solve another story. If she doesn't, the consequence this time is huge.I fell in love with Mina in book 1, "UnEnchanted." She is still relatable, endearing, funny and very much a teenager. She isn't very high-strung or super dramatic, but she is a little. Enough for you to realize she is a teenager, but not so much that she's annoying. I sometimes laugh out loud at her inner dialogue and then I want to tell it is going to be okay.Nothing much has changed in her companions. Nan is still a little eccentric and silly and very loyal. Jared is as mysterious as ever and I struggled with Mina trying to decipher his motives. If you have read a few tales with the Fae then you know the nature of the beast is tricky. Everything isn't cut and dry or out in the open. They are secretive and usually have a complicated and intricate history, which always tip their hat one way or the other. And Ever is a new addition to the crew. She only has a couple of appearances so I haven't really figured out what I feel about her either. At this point she could easily be a good guy or a bad one. She has an attitude though, which I always love."Fairest" had a crazy, adventurous and chaotic plot. I thought it was a great follow-up. It was more in depth, more life-altering and more complex. I liked that it had more teeth. The first story was easy enough to figure out, but Mina's role was a bit harder. A hefty game changer is thrown in and then the next story rolls out alongside. Dork that I am, I was on pins waiting to see how it would end. I really thought it had a high chance of working out as I hoped, but you don't know for sure until it's over.I had a wonderful experience losing myself in "Fairest." My only complaint is that it was short just as its predecessor. I downed it in just a couple of hours. The plot was fun and amusing. Mina and her supports were stimulating, comical and gratifying.

Awesome Tale!
Book Review- Fairest by Chanda HahnMina is back and trying to move on from what happened from the Little Red Riding Hood tale. Mina tries to watch Brody when she can get a glimpse of him. Her heart is broken. However she has decided that in order to prevent this from happening again, she has decided to keep her family curse to herself.Nan worries about Mina and her behavior. She doesn’t remember what happened and has no explanation for Mina. Mina can’t focus and seems to be in her own world. Nan has no clue how to help her or even shake her out of her self imposed gloom.Mina knows that the story is building for the next tale and it’s going to be a big one. She is trying hard to be aware so she can save the person the story chooses. Unfortunately Mina’s roll is not what she thought it would be. Jared tries to prepare her but everything starts to go wrong. It involves her friends and unleashes a Grimm reaper. Mina is in danger and she must make major sacrifices and dangerous bargains with Fae in order to complete the tale. This series is becoming one of my favorites. It is such a unique storyline and I can’t seem to get enough. I have a soft spot of Mina and have completely invested in her character. I want her to succeed and get her happy ending. She is a great character. The author provides another great story that centers around Mina and her quest to beat the tales. The story is different from the first and filled with fresh ideas. New things are introduced and Mina enters two huge tales. It was a wild ride and I can’t wait to see what Mina has to do next. I give it a 4 out of 5.

okay
I was a bit torn about this book. I liked the story idea and the first book left me wanting to know more. This one, however, felt more like filler so there could be more books in the series. The lengthy tangent involving the ogre was weird and didn't relate to any fairy tale I know. I nearly gave up on this book. It didn't get good until the end. Now I'm wary about reading the next one, in case it doesn't get to the point of the story either.

Very good read
I loved the second book of this series. I liked that Chanda Hahn made the tone of this book a little darker than the first. The book was not as "happy ever after" as the first. The change was refreshing and different. Can't wait to read the next book!
