I highly recommend Canidae Pure to anyone looking to treat their pup with high quality AND sustainable ingredients at a reasonable price! My flat coat retriever Maddie’s youth is behind her (~7 yrs old), so despite her typical retriever puppy energy well into adulthood, she was finally starting to slow down a tad. We thought for sure it was just age, but then we decided to switch her food up and we quickly learned that it wasn’t the case! Quickly after we switched her diet, her energy levels perked back up and her coat started looking better. Before Pure, a 30 minute walk would wear her out. Now Maddie forces me to play fetch with her after our walk, and looks for playtime at other times throughout the day. It’s no doubt a stark before-and-after due to the new food! She chows her food down as soon as I put it out for her, which is something that we’ve had issues with Maddie in the past. She’s definitely a fan of the Salmon + Sweet Potato! Finally Canidae is one of the only brands out there that truly works for the growers who produce their real ingredients using regenerative ag. As someone with an agriculture background, this is a big selling point for me!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My dog has been enjoying this food from the very first bowl. The ingredients seem to be high quality, and I like that it provides balanced nutrition without a lot of unnecessary fillers. The kibble size is just right, and my dog digests it well with plenty of energy throughout the day. I also noticed a healthy-looking coat and consistent appetite after switching to this formula. Overall, it’s a great dog food that offers excellent quality for the price, and I would definitely buy it again.

EDIT: Canidae has increased their prices 2x what it used to cost... unfortunately at $5/lb - it is much smarter and more economical to just feed my dog home-made food with supplemental vitamins. Kibbles at the end of the day are one of the convenient ways to feed your dog, and regardless of how much "good" ingredient goes into the big processor to create the kibbles you feed your dog... that process kills much of the nutrients in the original ingredients. Just think about what it takes to allow these kibbles to sit on the shelf for months at a time without going bad. At this price point, I just don't see the need to buy this anymore. ----- Dog Food Advisor rated this food with 4.5 stars for good reasons. My picky eater of a puppy generally hates her kibbles, but she will tolerate this one and when hungry she will eat it... vs. ignoring any other type of kibbles altogether. Overall it's good. I think Blue Buffalo is completely overrated and honestly I personally trust Canidae more after researching both companies. This is a great value for the quality of food you get. EDIT: 2018-July 23 There has been a price hike with this food that's up almost 180% from what I used to pay for this. So while the quality of the food remained the same and I understand that prices fluctuate depending on ingredients etc. At almost $4.00 / per lb - I will no longer be buying this product at this price. The value at this point is simply not there. I would recommend at that $4.00 per lb of what your dog eats - you might as well cook your own food for your dog and it would cost less (or the same) and have a lot fewer preservatives in their food (Of course do definitely choose a dog supplements. Since it is actually very hard for people to ensure that their homecooked meals have the proper nutrition needed for the dog). I will be switching to a different dog food or start evaluating home cooked recipes. So sad to see them do this price hike without any explanation.

Let's be honest. As pet owners, we care way too much about what comes out of our dog's posterior. I've had so many poop conversations with my husband that I know sound crazy to anyone who doesn't have pets or kids. Was the color okay? What about the consistency? One of our dogs had loose stools for several months that we could never figure out. She also had some skin problems, so my vet suggested it might be a food allergy. My personal opinion is that food allergies in animals is an overused diagnosis for a lot of symptoms. Our dog's particular skin problem didn't look like the a typical allergic reaction in dogs (she's a husky and her particular problem looked more like a zinc deficiency). However, I decided to humor the vet and try switching her to a limited ingredient dog food. We chose Canidae Grain Free dog food because it had 8 primary ingredients, none of which were chicken, plus the vitamins and minerals that we still want to make sure our dog receives. Let me say, after a few days on this food, my dog's poop has never looked better! After a few weeks, the skin issue around her eyes and mouth also cleared up! It's been over a month, and we also realized that her late night potty breaks have disappeared (she's an older dog, so we though the late night outdoor trips were just part of her old age). Overall, I'm very impressed by the quality of this dog food and believe it has had a positive impact on the health of my dog. (I've also since apologized to my vet, who is super sweet and very understanding of crazy pet owners like myself!)

I wanted to try this for my German shepherd who gets bad allergies in the spring. My vet (also my wife) said all the ingredients made it sound like it could be a good brand to try. She wasn’t wrong (and according to her she never is). Our dogs allergy symptoms improved but didn’t alleviate the issue entirely. We noticed he wasn’t itching as much and when he would, it wasn’t for a long time. Some people say it smells bad or rancid after a few days, which was not a problem for us. I kept the food in the bag and rolled it up tightly before I would put a clip on it to seal it. It’s stored in an airtight container so maybe that did the trick. I got the salmon and sweet potato and our dog eats it up fast. Make sure to slowly incorporate it with the old food to limit any reaction the dog may have. 10/10 recommend and this is now the brand we use for all the dogs.

We've been feeding this food to our dog for most of his life. He's now eleven years old and still going strong. Since he's such a travel enthusiast, we always take him on road trips to either swim in a lake, go on hiking trails or play in the snow. We're always amazed at how he can still hike all day and then still want to go for a swim in the lake that evening. I recently took him in to the vet for a dental cleaning. They ran his blood work and the vet told me that he had the blood work results of a one year old dog. The only complaint my wife has is that the food has a slight odor of salmon which is obvious since that's the first ingredient. So I keep the food inside the original bag that is inserted into a large plastic container with a snap top lid. The slight smell of salmon is well worth having him be so healthy with a beautiful shiny coat. I also brush his teeth a few times a week and use a tongue cleaning brush just to make sure his breath is fresh.

The dogs like this well enough and I am happy with the recipe/ingredients. The kibble, however, seems problematic. The individual pieces disintegrate into a sort of coarse dust. I don't see that it matters to the dogs, but it bothers me given that it brings the manufacturing process into question. I will also note that this food is too expensive to have to take the extra step of adding wet food to make it more palatable. I may buy one more bag to confirm this is more than a fluke but am more likely to shop with a local independent business.

Good Food for the Labradors. High Protein means feed a bit less and keep the boys lean.
