Another reason for hand-washing is because there is less likelihood of getting a snag. So if you do opt to go with machine washing - it would be best to put them in a separate laundry bag or at least make sure there is nothing in the washer like zippers or snaps that can catch the sock itself. I put the compression sock first and make sure my regular sock does not roll up the compression sock up. The injury is in the metatarsals where nothing can be actually helpful, except for healing over time, resting the foot & compression-type brace. This style is very light weight & I am wearing these it under my sock on the one foot. My foot hurts but I can feel a difference between no brace & with brace (without the brace, Iโ€™m in more pain when walking).
