will this work without a great wall of fire grate?

I believe it should, as long as there's nothing weird going on with the shape of your fireplace. It's absolutely a solid piece that does a great job of reflecting heat out into the room, as well as protecting the bricks.

what color is the unpainted back plate?

The grate wall i purchase was painted black, front and back. I’m very happy with the product it’s a nice addition to our fireplace.

Our living room is about 30' long, and 20' wide. Would a grate wall be effective in that space?

‘Effectiveness’ isn’t really a function of room size; it depends on the heat output of the fuel you burn, the size and design of your fire box and similar factors. Regardless of room size, this heavy metal plate will reflect and radiate heat into your room. Our zero-clearance ‘prefab’ fireplace is on the long wall of a living/dining area about your dimension, open to a second story and loft above. This ‘Grate Wall’ makes a noticeable difference in the heat radiated into the area around the fireplace, where we usually will sit when we’ve got a fire going. It captures and reflects heat that otherwise would disappear up the flue.

Does this work well with gas fireplace or wood ?

This is intended for a wood fireplace. It is a companion product to the Great Wall of fore grate. I would think you could use it on gas as well. I have one for my wood fires and it made a big difference in how much heat is projected to the room.
