Pop [VINYL]

Superb reissue of an album that did little for me at the time. Funny how the years can change one’s opinion.Excellent pressing, as all of the reissued and remastered U2 records I have bought have been. Obviously quality control are doing their job. This one has also been remixed as the band felt that they didn’t have time to get it just right at the point of release. Whether it is better or not is up to the listener, but some tracks have definitely been changed.Whilst being called Pop this isn’t really a pop album. The Pop term was a reference to the art movement rather than the musical genre. This is a tour de force of genuinely innovative guitar playing and processing atop some seriously tight rhythm work from Adam and Larry. Loads of production tricks and heavy electronic beats abound throughout.Discotheque starts the album like a dancing bear kicking down your front door, followed, on the third track, Mofo, by an even bigger one. Mofo is possibly the most intense song in the album. There is a wonderful languid laid back track called The Playboy Mansion that is one of my favourite on the album.Overall a really strong album, despite having a lot of different production approaches and producers.

Superb album. Hated by so many people but loved by u2 fans. And a great price on amazon.

POP on it's release disappointed, some good tracks, notably Discoteque and Do you feel love, but although good, somehow wasn't a classic U2 album. The release changes do much, you realise now the quality, great production values, really deep, complex and layered sounds. It actually sounds more impressive now than the remastered Achtung Baby. The quality of the remastering is second to none and on vinyl it is certainly rediscovered. Maybe it was ahead of it's time, now it still sounds fresh and up to date, powerful and atmospheric. The remastering really does take this album where it should have been and I would rate now amongst their best. I think from the original release this is a massive step up and you realise how good it was, where with Achtung, it was always good, so even the improvements with the remaster do not have the same impact.

A good repress if the original - nice double LP - came with an insert for the lyrics and two art sleeves for the records as well and standard sleeves.

This is in my top 3 fave albums by U2, they still make class albums now, but Pop is a classic & very under rated.
