I place the green coconut on the counter and push the opener into the coconut until it reaches the hard shell, then I place the coconut on the floor and hit the tool with a small hammer (so glad that this is 100% metal). My husband can open it by hitting the tool with his hand. Using the machete I went outside to open the coconuts now I can do it inside. Using the tool does produce a small amount of coconut shaving on the floor that is easy to clean up with a kitchen towel. Review: Works as described and makes losing a finger opening coconuts almost impossible now - I find this tool to work perfectly to open almost all coconuts. It's designed for young green ones, and opens them so easily it's great. I've also open older coconuts with no problems, this thing is sturdy. It takes a couple of bounces on the ground with the coconuts and the opener together to crack into the shell, but then the rest is pretty simple.
