In the larger basket there are a few small holes that the rice may fall out of, but considering it is sticky rice, this isn't a huge problem in the steaming process. I dont know what you mean about discoloration of your rice and water. You dont submerge your rice in water it has never turned my rice or water colors. **Q: Can you use this with a normal pot underneath?** A: You probably can, if the pot is deep. You do not want the basket to be in the water. **Q: Does it come with a lid?** A: No, the sticky rice steamer does not come with a lid. I use the metal lid that goes with the pot that I nest it in.
