Rene Magritte 1989-1967: Thoughts Rendered Visible

a lot of art for the price
This is an excellent little art book for the price (at the moment a good-quality used paperback is available for a mere $2 plus the usual shipping); you get quite a few good-quality color reproductions of Magritte’s work, including some of his most famous images and a decent sampling of his typical subjects and styles. Most images fill half to a whole page in the book, which is about 10 inches square. The text doesn’t provide as much biographical information as I was hoping for, perhaps because, unlike some of his fellow Surrealists, Magritte didn’t live a life around which a lively narrative could be spun; Paquet admits at one point, “Magritte led an unobtrusive and bourgeois life”—perhaps like his familiar men in their dark suits and bowler hats. Instead, Paquet analyzes in detail each picture the book presents. He sees Magritte (or says that Magritte saw himself) as a philosopher as well as an artist, using his paintings to illuminate the gap between art and language on the one hand and physical reality on the other. It was not clear to me how much these interpretations were Magritte’s and how much were Paquet’s.I recommend this book strongly to anyone who wants to sample or learn more about Magritte’s work without investing money or space in a huge art book.

Exactly What I Needed For My Research
I love Art History and the way Taschen series is written, I have been an avid reader of their books. I have collected their Hard Covers for my Coffee Table and soft covers for me to take with me -- to bed, to bathroom, to doctor's office and to a trip to my relative's house. Rene Magritte is my all time favorite painter/artist and I enjoyed reading about him in this book.

Buying this book
I wanted to buy this book in used condition, but usually Amazon has great quality used items. This one, however, had pages falling out, markings on the page, and dog ear tagged pages all throughout the book. It was simply not the quality I was expecting.

A most excellent book
I'm delighted with this book. I bought it as an introduction to Magritte's work & found it an ideal size to show off the wonderful colour illustrations to their best effect, without being too large & ungainly (can also get it into my bookshelf!)I didn't want anything too small (or the power would have been lost); nor a book of posters. This was a excellent size to handle comfortably, with lovely, shiny, quality pages. All that I wanted.

Famous Belgian!!!
Better than the Phaidon book , 96 pages full of brilliant prints, "The Treachery Of Images" CECI N'EST UNE PIPE and"The Pleasure Principle (Portrait Of Edward James) being my favourites. My only (slight) criticism is that the prints were often not on the same page as the the relevant text.I liked the idea that this book comes with covers back and front to act as a bookmark, very useful!
