Yes, you can wire it for 1 switch for light and 1 switch for fan.

How many bulbs ar in this fixture?

There are three bulbs. They are LED. The ones I have in mind or E 12s. These are also sold on Amazon. This provides plenty of light. I also have a dimmer switch.

What is the diameter of the downrod? I am trying to purchase a longer downrod and the product specs do not show if it is 1" or 3/4".

Is the low fan speed setting faster then most fans?

No, I do not find it to be faster than any other fan. I have had in excess of at least 200 ceiling fans over the past 10 years. This is a great little ceiling fan for the price and covers a pretty good-sized area. I live in AZ if that makes a difference. I highly recommend this semi-formal fan for any room. Dress it up or dress it down..
