Can you break the capsules into the cats food easily?

Have been giving these to my small female tabby at the night feeding for years. I open the capsule (which is very easy) and pour the contents right onto the middle of the wet food pile, then cover over with a small amount of the food. I then (and I do this for the young male who doesn't get the Cosequin) pour a little boxed broth (beef or chicken) into the empty cat food can and swish/rinse it then pour that over the food. The female has always eaten the food Cosequin and all.

Can this safely be used with begining stage kidney issues?

I called the company (888-886-6442) because my 16 yr. old cat also has kidney issues and I was told by them that it is fine to given them the Cosequin.  Their safety studies have  shown no problems.  FYI, my cat has shown good improvement with the product.

I see no msm in this. I thought cats needed this as well. Has anyone tried something with msm? Does it make a difference?

1."MSM" stands for "Methylsulfonylmethane";  and Chondroitin is basically the Chondroitin Sulphate form in the joints.2.MSM helps in controlling rheumatoid arthritis; Chondroitin helps in controlling osteoarthritis.Pasted from  For Dogs: All of the ingredients used in Cosequin are listed on the manufacturer's web site. However after research : Nutramax Laboratories does has a  supplement  "Cosequin® for Cats - Professional Line" with Boswellia Serrata Extract  --- Extracts of Boswellia serrata have been clinically studied for osteoarthritis and joint function, particularly for osteoarthritis of the knee, with the research showing a slight improvement of both pain and function compared to a placebo.4 Positive effects of Boswellia in some chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, bronchial asthma, osteoarthritis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease have been reported.5 A Boswellia extract marketed under the name Wokvel has undergone human efficacy, comparative, pharmacokinetic studies.678 Some see Boswellia serrata as a promising alternative to NSAIDs, warranting further investigation in pharmacological studies and clinical trials.

Question 4

Anyone else notice that recent capsules/powder have unpleasant smell?

Yes! Ordered 2 bottles back in Jan. 2017 (both with EXP date on Jan 2020), one bottle was ok but the secomd one had a very strong distinct stale smell right as soon as I opened it; gave it to my cat anyway, less than a week after he developed a bad itchy reaction all over his head to the point I had to take him to the vet where we also compared the Cosequin bottles and the vet agreed that mine had a very bad smell. I've been using Cosequin for about 2 years, pills have a bit of smell but not that strong and aweful smell I experienced last; cannot return it cause, by the time I opened the second bottle 30 days has gone by :-( . Next time, 1 bottle at the time and I won't order from a third party merchant.
