do you have to fill the crock or can you do smaller batches also?

You do not have to fill the crock. You can make a small batch of sauerkraut in a large pot. Fermenting crocks should not be filled any fuller than 80% full anyway, to prevent water over flowing and to allow carbon dioxide to build inside the crock. first batch of dill pickles, they came out cloudy and rather soft, threw them out .Would like to know possible cause?? any info would help

I googled.Spoilage originates with faulty sanitation, bad ingredients and improper packing. A common cause of cloudy pickles is the water that comes out of the tap. Hard water is full of minerals that can make the water cloudy. This doesn't make the pickles inedible -- you can eat them despite the hard water haze in the jar. Get a clear brine by softening the water on your own. Boil the water you need for pickling for about 15 minutes. Let it sit in a container for 24 hours. Pour out the water carefully, without disturbing the sediment at the bottom of the container. Once the sediment moves, stop pouring. Use the clear water for brine and discard the sediment water.using table salt instead of canning salt, hard water, aluminum pots, yeast growth from contamination.hope it helps.
