Coleman Red Canyon 8-Person Camping Tent, Weatherproof Family Tent Includes Room Dividers, Rainfly, Adjustable Ventilation, Storage Pockets, Carry Bag, & Quick Setup

I've been camping--alone, in small groups, and with my family--ever since I was 11 years old. Over the years, I've used and owned a lot of tents. Most of the tents I recommend are from companies like Eureka and ALPS Mountaineering. I don't believe I've ever recommended a Coleman branded tent in the solo-, 2-, 3-, or 4-person sizes, but when it comes to tents for larger groups, these Coleman tents are hard to beat! I bought this to replace our old Red Canyon Tent when it got damaged (not due to workmanship or materials). It was old when we bought it second-hand, and we got many more years of use out of it. I looked around at other large capacity tents, but this one had the best set of features for the price. Its rain fly coverage is better than most of the high-capacity tents I considered. Ideally, I'd want a rain fly that goes all the way to the ground, but having owned an earlier version of this model previously, I knew we'd never had problems with water entering--even in some crazy bad weather. The heavier, tarp-like bottom is very durable. That said, I still typically set up with another tarp (or "footprint") under the main body of the tent, just to limit wear-and-tear and to keep the bottom cleaner for a quicker tear-down. What else can I say? We're a large family, and we put a strain on tents I love that this one give you options. Set it up as one big room, or put up the dividers and you have up to three rooms (they make one on each end {left and right of the door} and one in the middle). There's room to stand in the middle for most people (I'm 5'8" and I still had plenty of head space). When our kids were very little, we'd have a portable playpen set up inside. Now we typically have an inflatable queen mattress on one end, with plenty of room for sleeping pads and sleeping bags in the rest of the tent. The attachable gear loft is useful, as are the additional mesh pockets on the sides. We don't use the little pet door at the rear, but I can see how those of you with little dogs would find it useful. One improvement made with this most recent model is that they made the front welcome mat/mud tarp detachable (our previous one had it permanently affixed). Now, if it gets really dirty, you can pick it up and wash it away from the tent, rather than trying to clean it while people still may need to come in and out. To get the best protection and performance in stormy weather, be sure to use every stake point, and use all possible guy-lines. Also, to keep your tent in top shape as long as possible, remember these tips: - Don't let people climb in and out with the door unzipped only part way on the long vertical side. Open it all the way to the top. The area around where the side panels change color puts the hardest lateral pull on the zipper. Opening it only that far, and then having people move the door flap out of the way adds to that stress and increases the chance you might damage the zipper. - When you break camp, if the tent isn't going to be set up again very soon, let your tent dry before you roll it up. If you roll (or stuff it) while wet, and then forget to dry it out when you get home, you'll have problems with mildew. It can lead to a musty smell, unsightly spots, and (in the most extreme cases) holes in your tent. If you must pack up a wet tent, be sure to air it out when you get home. You can set it up in a sunny space, or hang it (we hang it from our deck, but you could hang it from a tree or clothes line). - Bring a broom and sweep out your tent before you pack it away. If you pack it up with dirt and sand inside, it will act like little bits of sandpaper and wear away at the materials. - Avoid eating in your tent, or keeping food in your tent, especially if you'll be in bear country. Smells from dripped or spilled foods can stick around a long time, and animals' noses are often far more sensitive than ours. - If you're not too concerned about privacy, its warm enough, and you know that rain isn't likely, consider leaving the rain fly off. It makes set up and tear down quicker, and it will let you watch the sky while protected from the bugs. Just keep the fly and stakes in the bag near the door, in case you need to put up the fly quickly due to unexpected changes in the weather. - Check the ground where you plan to set up your tent before you do it: remove any noticeable rocks, sticks, or anything that might damage the tent floor or make your sleep uncomfortable. - If setting up in or adjacent to a wooded area, look around for dead trees that could blow over or fall onto your tent, and be sure to look up for any live trees with dead branches hanging above you. You don't need a lot of wind for dead wood to come down! My wife and I were sitting in camp on a quiet summer afternoon when we suddenly heard a couple of cracks before a large limb dropped not far from where we were sitting. It makes sense to look up before you place a tent, or your chairs! - MOST IMPORTANT: Be sure to set it up once at home before you head out, even if you've set it up before. It's a great way to remind yourself how to set it up, and to make sure you have all of the stakes and poles together (especially if you broke camp in a hurry during your last adventure).

I'll try to update this post once we get a chance to test out the rain flap, but for three days of sunny weather it was a great tent! Space: This thing is truly like a small mansion. Obviously, I exaggerate, but by surprisingly little. Don't buy this tent if you are trying to show off your minimalism and ability to rough it; unless you're planning on packing 12 campers into this thing, you're going to look like you want to be comfortable and probably will be. We fit a Pack-'n'-Play (with toddler), two adults, and two kids in the tent with about half the space left over. Set-up and tear-down: Reasonable, not super-easy, but two adults could get things put away in the 15 minutes before the kids got bored with "helping" or the toddler wandered off, and nothing was difficult. Setup happened in the dark and was done by others in about the same amount of time with no complaints. Size when packed up: Fairly small for the size of the tent, fits in a bag about the size of two gym bags placed end-to-end. We had only a little trouble fitting it, the Pack-'n'-Play, sleeping bags for 4, clothes and stuff for 4 days, 3 kids, and two adults into our sub-compact car (Honda Fit . . . yeah, we're about due for a minivan). Compared to everything else, the tent was pretty easy to find space for. It's a nice, square-shaped bag that we just tucked into the corner first thing. We awed everyone with our giant tent, and the $100 sale price is amazing. If you want a big tent on a budget, this seems like a great value. We haven't tested it with rain or used it enough to comment on durability, but since we live near Seattle, it's only a matter of time until we can comment on at least the rain. I'll update once that happens . . . if I remember (I admit, I'm a feather-brain). Update (1/23/12): We didn't use this tent all that heavily last summer - probably about 10 nights total on three camping trips - but we did have it out during a moderately hard rain / mild thunderstorm. The rain didn't last too long, so we weren't swimming in puddles or anything, but it did give a pretty good soaking to everything and left enough puddles for the kids to have a great time with rain boots the next day. It handled the rain fine. I continue to feel very good about this purchase. We're expecting child #4 (yes, we finally have that minivan), and we'll probably be taking the whole family camping a few more times during this coming summer.

I had this tent for 10 years and i loved it, i am about to order a second as the poles are starting to wear out and snap. It is hard to beat the setup of this tent where you can fit two queen size mattresses at both ends, have plenty of room in the middle and at the ends of the mattresses to store your gear. I have been in downpours almost every year, only recently did i have some small pools of water in the corners but i think that is to be expected after such a long time, since i use it a handful of times every summer for 10 years. i would also like to note that i had never used a seam sealer so maybe that would have helped. now it is on amazon for $88, very hard to beat for the size and utility of this tent. For the people that complain about getting wet and zippers not working, you either didn't setup the tent well enough or you have a lemon. Never contacted Coleman customer service for anything but i would encourage that. I found that stretching the tent initially and staking it down before putting up the poles worked great for me, making sure it is nice and tight at all corners. Then i would put up the main poles and side poles. When putting up the rain fly, if i knew we were expecting heavy rain i might consider using the Velcro on the under side of the rain fly to secure to the poles, but if you only use the ropes at the ends of the fly and stretch them out far enough and stake them into the ground, the rain fly will be nice and tight and will not touch any part of the tent to keep you nice and dry. Update: While i still love this tent and would have a very difficult time choosing another tent as a replacement i had to drop 1 star from my previous review. I had the unfortunate pleasure to go camping during a weekend with plenty of rain. While we did stay dry, about 4 pools of water collected at the corners of the tent. It was a little disappointing as the old tent did very well, only until recent, after using it for about 10 years. I just purchased Seam Grip as it was highly recommended on a few different sites, hopefully that does the trick. the total cost spent on the seam sealer will still keep this way below any other tent at this size. Another issue that i was only aware of after setting up was that Coleman did away with the electrical port in the back of the tent, now it is only a vent. There used to be a half circle port in the back with zippers that you could pass electricity from the back, but that is now only a vent. This isn't a huge issue for me, but it is for friends with certain health issues. Now we pass a cable through the front door, a minor inconvenience. Lastly, the way the tent is setup, it puts a good amount of stress on the front zipper and i can see it becoming an issue in the near future. Did not have a chance to figure out the source of stress, whether it maybe the way it is staked down or the way the poles are setup, don't have much control over that, but if i can figure it out i will update. Update 2: I finally had the chance to seam seal the tent and while setting it up i figured out how to remove the stress on the zipper. In the four main corners of the tent, there is a metal loop on the bottom with two pins. one pin is used to hold the main poles and the other pin is used to hold in the side poles. I have always used, what i call the center pin for the main poles, it is inside part of the fabric within that loop, i found that when using the other pin, the one that floats freely within the metal loop for the main poles, removes all stress from the door and zipper.

UPDATED REVIEW: I've had this tent for a number of years now and I can confidently say that the value proposition is STRONG! We've weathered tornado force winds and torrential downpours with rarely even a drop of water getting in the tent. With all of the guy lines pegged down, the tent is VERY stable. It has held up to a lot of use and abuse and continues to work well for me and my camping crew. Just be sure you have enough flat space to place this tent. A lot of campsites may be big enough, but the amount of flat rock-free space may be small. I've always been able to get this tent to fit the spaces we've chosen, but sometimes is seems like a beast. We always appreciate the ample size and conveniences that this tent offer. My only wish is that it had a power port for running a power cord. Other than that, I would buy this tent again if something ever happened to this one. I've really grown to appreciate the smart construction and durability this tent has delivered. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I read a lot of reviews and searched high and low for the best value before purchasing this tent. The Coleman Red Canyon was in my price range and appeared to meet my needs. I wanted an eight-person tent that would comfortably hold two queen-sized mattresses plus have space around for extra stuff. On paper, this tent definitely fits the bill! The package arrived faster than I expected and the integrity of the packaging was in good condition. I haven't camped with this tent yet, but I didn't want too many days to pass without at least putting it together in the back yard, and checking for any missing parts, so that's what I decided to do. I bought a fairly inexpensive heavy tarp to go under the tent. Because of the unusual footprint, I purchased a 10x20 foot heavy duty tarp which I marked up and later cut down to the size of the fully assembled tent. That part was easy! NOTE: when camping, you want your tarp to either be exactly the size of your tent footprint or else slightly smaller to avoid puddling of rainwater. Assembling the tent probably took us somewhere around 30-40 minutes the first time. Since we weren't in a hurry, we flubbed a few steps and had to backtrack. The instructions were simple and mostly easy to follow, but a few of the steps could have been made a little more clear. I like that the instructions are stitched into the bag! It was also a windy day ... so that slowed us down as well. At least the instructions didn't blow away. Once we had the poles in the correct holes, the tent came together easily and quickly. We will definitely be faster at it next time. In my opinion, this tent is a two-person job unless you're an experienced camper. And if you're bringing a tent this size, you've probably got extra hands on deck to help with this process. Two people can get it done with relative ease! I would be challenged to assemble this tent alone, but I'm no expert. Once assembled, the tent easily withstood some decent breezes in my back yard. It was a fairly windy day. It wasn't raining, so I will have to experience the weatherproof features at a later date. Attaching all of the guy lines would add further stability, but it felt plenty stable without. This is one SPACIOUS tent! You will be proud and your friends will be jealous. With the rain tarp off, this tent is also quite open and airy. There are plenty of windows to make this big tent feel light and bright. I am 5'11" and can stand comfortably in most of the tent. The edges taper down, so putting beds at the corners with a common area in the middle would work perfectly. The zipper was reasonable to open and close. Time will tell if it holds up to repeated camping trips. I trust the Coleman brand and expect that it's designed for many years of repeated use. We didn't assemble the side curtains to create the "rooms" inside, but the anchor points were all there, If I was camping with kids or bashful friends, the ability to close off both side sections of the tent would be quite handy. There are two small storage bags built into the sides of the tent to hold small items on the inside of the tent. The upper mesh bin would easily hold a light or a few more small items that you wanted off the floor. Our first impressions of the tent are that it is a good value, good quality, and we are eager to try it out it on a camping trip! Taking the tent down happened in half of the time or less from putting it up. I would estimate that we had it down and packed in fifteen minutes. The tent fit back into the bag with very little drama. It's a snug fit, so definitely squeeze out the air and roll it tightly. Also, I had a borrowed tent to compare to and the stuffed bag was no larger than a much smaller 4-person REI tent ... so I think it's an efficient packaging accomplishment. With all of the good news aside, I can only think of a few downsides to this tent. First all, I wouldn't want to backpack with this tent. It's compact enough in the bag, but I wouldn't want to carry it very far because it felt rather heavy to me. Secondly, the diameter of the assembly poles and the amount of bending really had my buddy worried as we assembled this tent. I was a little less concerned. I think the poles are fiberglass and should withstand some abuse. They're meant to bend, right? Again, time will tell. The smallest poles cover the rain-fly on the front of the tent. I am hoping they all hold up well. Since I don't have significant experience with tents, I can't say if this is normal or not. Nothing broke during assembly, so there's that! In my estimation, this tent is an excellent value! So if you're looking for an attractive, large, reasonably priced tent that will be the envy of the campgrounds, this might be your tent!

I purchased this for use by my family of 4. We have two young scouts in the family and my wife and I are active in their Pack as well so having a comfortable well sorted out tent was a must for us. So far we've taken this tent out in the following weather conditions: Hot, wet, raining buckets, windy, cool and cold/windy weather. It has performed very well in all of these conditions and I have no doubt that it will continue to do so for several years to come. Some of the observations I've made having taken it into the field several times are: 1. Use a quality ground tarp. The tent bottom seems like it could get beat up quickly without a tarp beneath it. Spend the extra bucks and get the HD tarp. 2. Once you put the tarp down, completely unroll and spread the tent out, stake down the 4 loops at the ends of the tent. Doing this will make putting the rest of the tent up VERY easy. So much so that you should be able to put the tent up solo (minus the rain fly) with no trouble after you use it a couple of times. 3. You have to do the grey poles first. If you start with the orange poles it's a hassle to put the tent up. 4. The tent tends to be hot and stuffy inside with the fly on and minimal breeze. We used it recently in a heavily shaded camp site with the temps in the low 80's and it was uncomfortably hot inside the tent until well after night fall. 5. Had a little water seepage near the door in a heavy rain storm. It was at the seam where the tent wall met the floor. I think it was an issue with the design of the rain fly. It allowed water to run down and collect right at that seam. If the door overhang was a little bigger or possibly designed a little differently to channel water away from the door (duh) this wouldn't be an issue. It was exacerbated by the fact that wind was blowing at the door side of the tent which cause that wall to push in a bit and create a bigger area for water to pool. It should be classified as an annoyance rather than a serious design flaw. 6. You can't close off all of the mesh "windows". There's a window on the door and on the opposite back wall of the tent that can be closed off. There are mesh panels at the end walls that are completely covered by the rain fly to protect against the weather and privacy but you can't zip up a solid panel to make the tent wind proof and warmer in cold/rainy/windy conditions. 7. Stake it down good. Coleman gives you lots of pegs. Use them! Every ground loop and guy-out line should be utilized since this tent is so big and susceptible to the influence of the wind. Overall, my family and I really like this tent. It's got plenty of room to settle in and have ample space to get/keep your gear organized, not be bumping into each other with multiple people in it and not go bananas if you have to hunker down in foul weather. I don't think I would recommend putting more than 2 adults and 3 small kids in it. Hope this helps!

I'm a hiker and I have a couple of ultra light tents that I take hiking with me. However, my family and I were about to go on a car camp weekend and I needed something to fit 5 people + 175 lb dog. I didn't want to spend a lot of money and wasn't sure if I should invest in an expensive tent only for it to be used once. So after reading the reviews I decided to give this Coleman a try. I honestly had my doubts at first because as an advanced hiker I have not owned any Coleman products. However, after my first use I'm completely sold on this tent with the versatility, durable construction, and ease of setup and tear down. I took this tent out of the box for the first time at the camp site (not a good idea generally). I recommend that you take it out and test set it up before you go on your trip in case something is missing and to get a feel for the pieces/parts beforehand. I was lucky and had plenty of daylight at the camp site. Setup was actually very quick and I was done setting up the tent by myself (easier with two people) before others that have started their tent setup well before me. The inside of the tent is very roomy and you can easily stand up and walk around. What I liked the most about the tent is the simplicity of design and roominess. It also is a lot bigger than what the pictures implies so you will need a good foot print to prop up the tent along with the ropes that extend past the tent to stake it properly. This is not a negative but just be aware of that. I do recommend that you get a tarp to place under the tent. I placed my tent on top of a nice flat dirt surface which is common in some camp sites. Nothing wrong with that except that overnight on a cool night it might get damn under the tent from the ground. The bottom of the tent is very sturdy and that's not an issue but it took me some time when I got home to air out the tent, let the dirt dry, and dust it clean. It definitely needs to be cleaned before you stow it away and having it on top of a tarp will make a big difference. I'm now looking forward to more camping using this tent. The whole family enjoyed the fact that it comes with a floor mat, has windows which can be covered, and has privacy partitions on the inside along with pockets on either side to slow various things in. It is almost like hope away from home. Very nice tent and I will give Coleman products more consideration next time I shop for outdoor gear.

**EDIT** I bought this tent for $121, now I see it's at $100 - BUY THIS TENT NOW! :) We took this tent for a week-long family car-camping trip in the Smoky mountains and it was GREAT. Here's what I think about it: 1. Not recommended for 8 people - that would suck. We had 4 people with 4 twin air mattresses and it was so much more pleasant to camp in this than in smaller tents we've tried. It's nice to be able to fully stand up in the middle of the tent. Plenty of room for gear. 2. It rained for 36 hours straight, and only a tiny bit of water seeped in at the very ends that aren't covered by the rain fly - but that was easy to just sop up with a towel or whatever from time to time. It wasn't very gusty though so I can't say if it would hold up well in high winds (but I imagine it would be OK). We didn't use a tarp as a footprint - just set it up and it stayed much drier than I anticipated (thank goodness). 3. It got down to the low 40's at night but it didn't get crazy cold in the tent. We opened the two side windows during the day and it was perfect. 4. It was very easy to set up and tear down. Just pay attention when you're setting it up to how it's folded so you can fold it up the same way and it will definitely fit back into the carrying bag very nicely. It can be confusing if you don't remember how it was folded in the first place. 5. Great price! I've camped in way more expensive gear from fancy camping gear stores and besides the zipper mechanism, I have no idea why in the world the other companies get away with charging 4 times as much for their tents. This was perfect for our camping week. I think Coleman brand has come a long way since the early days of leaky tents and inferior products. I was hesitant to get this tent at first but now I'm really glad I did instead of spending a bunch of money on a fancy brand!

The package arrived double-boxed without any flaw in either the inner or outer cardboard boxes however, upon opening the package to reveal the canvas carry-bag, a 3/4" diameter hole was found on the very bottom center of the bag. Based on my opinion that the appearance of the packaging was flawless, I can only assume the hole in the carry-bag was there before it was packaged. For the record the hole in the canvas carry-bag was resolved satisfactorily. After unzipping and inspecting the contents of the canvas carry-bag, I did not notice any apparent defects to the tent components nor did it appear there were any missing components. On the following day I pitched the tent in the back yard by myself. It took around 50 minutes but I had never pitched this type of tent before and it is only the 3rd time I have ever pitched any tent. I would guess that, with a 2nd adult and now having some experience, this tent can be pitched in 1/3 the time it took me to do it solo the first time. After pitching the tent, my initial inspection has revealed no apparent flaws. The zipper is a little tight on the front door but that may be due to me spreading and staking the floor of the tent too tightly. It seems well ventilated and the rainfly seems to fit tightly. I left it up overnight (and empty) and it looked the same in the morning. I want to give this at least one more star but simply haven't had it and used it enough yet. I will be taking it on a weekend family camping trip soon and will try to update this review afterwards. UPDATE: We used this tent for the first time this weekend. It went up in about 35 minutes with 2 people fully staked/guyed-out and rainfly attached. Some of that time was because I had difficulty with a very large buried tree stump that was where I needed a stake so I had to improvise a little. We experienced some sporadic light rain about an hour after we pitched the tent but had no issues with moisture in the tent. Later that evening while sleeping we experienced some very gusty winds ahead of a thunderstorm with very heavy rains. The winds were strong enough that it ripped a rainfly from a fellow campers tent about 75 yards from us and completely flipped a shade canopy they left out over their picnic table. The winds lasted about 10 minutes until the rains started and then died down considerably. The heavy rains lasted 15 -20 minutes and then there were a few sporadic, light showers afterwards. Upon inspection the next morning, this tent lost no visible integrity from the winds the night before and we could find not a single drop of moisture inside the tent. For the record I did apply Coleman Seam Sealer to all floor, wall, and rainfly seams prior to the trip and replaced the stakes provided with the tent with 10" spike-type stakes. Other than that there was no additional tarp or cover over this tent however we did place a tarp under the tent prior to pitching and folded the ends of the tarp "under" itself about 6" so that no part of the tarp was visible.

Solo sus. Familia de 4 personas 2 perros y nos encanta hacer camping, la verdad es muy amplia me encanta que puedes dividir en secciones la carpa por dentro y así tienes un espacio ma s privado aora cambiarte! También es alta yo mido 1.65 y no tengo que estar agachada en la carpa. Usualmente ponemos 2 colchones dobles dentro d e la carpa para nosotros y estamos muy cómodos. Es una carpa para climas cálidos y templados. Para climas fríos de 2 grados o menos no la recomiendo ya que tiene mucha ventilación y no es tan fácil mantener el calor por el tamaño. Para climas cálidos es perfecta ya que tiene varias ventanas que cuentan con mosquetero y además puede abrir en diferentes modos y el viente fluye.

Muy grande. Fácil de montar. Ventilación magnífica, buena protección contra la lluvia y mucha luz. Aunque indica que puede alojar 8 personas, por comodidad sería poco recomendable más de 5 adultos. El margen es mayor si van niños. Buenas calidades. No apta para invierno pues por su diseño no retendrá el calor. Mi precio de compra fue 267 Eur

Awesome tent! We took this tent on its maiden voyage this past long weekend and it exceeded our expectations. Very easy to set up for its size, although you will want at least 2 people involved. It uses the same pole and clip system of the smaller Coleman dome tents. Takedown was also simple and a one-woman job for us. We originally got this tent because we wanted enough room for our queen air mattress plus our toddler's pack n play--it easily fit both of these things and we had tons of extra space on all sides. I probably wouldn't put 8 people in this tent but 6 would fit comfortably, no problem. The room dividers are a neat feature although the resulting "rooms" are quite small and would only be comfy for kids. All in all, excellent quality and a great value. A++ would buy again.

I was a bit dubious after reading some of the negative reviews but figure the size itself was worth a try. Had this up in the garden for 3 days and I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was for 1 person to put up. We had all weather on us, sun rain and wind. The tent stayed dry with no leaks and the best bit was 0 condensation thanks to the extra mesh on the tent which is ace as there's nothing worse the waking up to drips on you in the morning. I would say it would fit 6 rather then 8 (4 adults 2 kids). We had our king-size mattress in there with our 2 dogs (working beardie and East European Shepard and we still had loads of room left so we even stuck our porter Loo down the one end coz why not :D For the price this is a great addition for camping and for me the best tent I've ever purchased so would highly recommend.
