I see where it says to test compatibility, use pliars to short circuit wall opener and if it opens it works. How exactly do I do this with pliers?

On your garage door opener where the 2 wires come in, just touch both of them with something metal (wire, pliars, etc). If the door opens or closes, it'll work.

Can I install it for my gate opener?

You might be. Does your gate opener uses a switch like garage door control. Then how the unit is going to mount where no water gets there. Also the wire access near by.
