The Corpus Hermeticum"" is a collection of short philosphical treatises, a powerful fusion of Greek and Egyptian thought, written in Greek in Alexandria between the first and third centuries AD and rediscovered in the West in the fifteenth century when it was first translated into Latin by the great scholar and philosopher Marsilio Ficino. These writing were believed from antiquity up to the early seventeenth century to be the writings of Hermes Trismegistus, 'thrice-great Hermes', the name given by Greeks of the classical and Hellenistic periods to the Ibis-headed Egyption god Thoth. They were central to the spiritual work of Hermetic societies in late antique Alexandria, aiming to awake gnosis, the direct realistion of the truth of the identity of the invividual and the Supreme, and are still read as inspirational writings today. Professor Mahe's translation of ""The Definitions of Hermes Trismegistus to Asclepius"" has been made from an old Armenian version and a recently rediscovered Greek manuscript in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. This collection of aphorisms is closely related to parts of the ""Corpus Hermeticum"".

The Shepherd of Souls
The Way of Hermes is an excellently translated and portable edition of the Corpus Hermeticum. It comes with me on my travels throughout the world and is my book before bedtime, since its wisdom is inexhaustible. Every line is a path into the hinterland of understanding the cosmos. Hermes as the Shepherd of Souls leads the way by revealing what is real and known to the soul. Even though his revelations deal with that which seem invisible or inapprehensible to the senses, he sharpens his teaching to reveal it these concepts in better definition. These are the topics that the soul wonders about: creation, the divine, what aids understanding and how to avoid what traps and imprisons the soul in misapprehension. So simple and so profound, Hermes' writings are mysteries that act as doorways. As a parallel Hermetic text, the Kore Kosmou, says of him:`When Hermes laid down his books, he said, "O sacred books of the Immortals, in whose pages my hand has recorded the remedies by which incorruptibility is conferred, remain for ever beyond the reach of destruction and decay, invisible and concealed from all who frequent these regions, until the day shall come in which the ancient heaven shall bring forth instruments worthy of you, whom the Creator shall call souls." Having pronounced upon his books, he wrapped them in their coverings, returned into the sphere which belonged to him, and all remained hidden for a sufficient space.'Those writings are hidden in the very elements, in the depths of the soul, waiting for us all to discover them. A word, a note of music, a dream or vision can activate Hermes' wisdom. Read and meditate!

Nice translation
This translation of the Corpus Hereticum is very readable and well worth its weight. The newer edition I bought also contains a hermetic text translated from Armenian. A great read.

Invaluable & Timeless Wisdom
This came highly recommended from a fellow mystic and it doesn't disappoint. Priceless wisdom that gives you insight into the unfolding mystery of 'what we are'. For anyone looking for a greater spiritual understanding of the world and Hermetic thought this is where you start.

Finally!
My husband has been looking for this book for a many years now so when I found it here, I immediately ordered it for his birthday. He says it's really good and he is not disappointed. He says to give it 5 stars and so I have. I haven't read it myself so can't say more than that. Probably worth mentioning to check the dimensions if you are not one for small books. It's the size of a paperback novel. We just thought it would be larger I suppose.
