Review: Fun, Tense, and Strategic - A great game from a great publisher. The updates the 2nd edition bring are more relevant cards and new card art. The art is very Munchkin and the new cards are fun as someone who is more familiar with the events of today rather than the events parodied by 1st edition. The game seems complicated at a glance but after some time the mechanics are easy to learn. I had a lot of fun with my friends, backstabbing, bluffing, and cackling like evil masterminds. A wonderful purchase.

If you're from the new land of "living card games" like Arkham Horror and such, note that Illuminati is much, much simpler than those. This is not a hyper complex RPG simulator using three hundred cards that cover a dozen different game mechanics. It's a very straightforward game where you build networks of factions (like convenience stores, or California) to create your Illuminated empire. It's kind of like playing a political cartoon. Most games of Illuminati are going to take an hour, maybe an hour an a half, so you don't have to commit an entire evening it, like you do many of its larger descendants in the card game universe.
