Angel Cop Complete OVA Series

Angel Cop is a great OVA series from a bygone era which was the 80s and 90s anime golden era. The animation is amazing. The story overall is entertaining. It was the first anime I owned on VHS back in the 90s which I love to bits so my view on the overall OVA is a bit biased.When it originally was released it had some controversial parts in the story namely antisemitic part on the plot. Stuff that was removed from the script in later releases before it was dubbed. This Blu-Ray has the cleaned up version as default as well the cleaned up subtitles but also has the original unedited subtitles if you want to view the anime as it was originally released. As well has a brief history of the controversy of the original script and how it got changed shortly after. Very informative and gives great perspective on that part of Japan's history.Overall Angel Cop is a great action packed OVA series with classic 80s/90s anime violence and amazing animation at times. I would always recommend this anime to anyone who loves that kind of stuff. The ending will feel a bit abrupt as the production went through some bumps over it's production life. The political intrigue almost feels more relevant today than it did back when this was released. With theme of unchecked capitalism using both authoritarian and marxist movements to destabilize countries for personal gain.

Angel Cop is an acquired taste. It can't reasonably be called good, but it is highly entertaining in a "What the WHAT?" kind of way. The dub is notorious for its use of "fifteening" where swearing was added at every opportunity in order to get a "15" rating in the UK and appeal to people who were seeking out "edgy" Anime at the time. It's hilarious, the amount of cursing that is randomly inserted into the dub. Still, it wasn't necessary, considering that the animation alone is so violent and gory that nobody in their right mind would ever think that it was aimed at kids. The thing is, the dubbing, in all its prurience, eliminates the out-of-left-field anti-semitism that is revealed toward the end. The unedited subtitles are included, if you want to see the original intention of the creators. It's... something else. Thankfully, a text supplement included on the disc explains the history of anti-semitism in Japan and puts the material in the context of the time when it was made. Still... wow.As to the quality of the disc itself, this is where it falters, sadly. Through no fault of Discotek, the only materials made available to them by the rights holders was an old standard definition videotape. I will say that the work that they did on stabilizing the image and smoothing out artifacts from the source material was commendable. However, there was no reason to release this on Blu-ray. All the upscaling and increased bitrate in the world wouldn't make a difference in the end product. It looks like what it is, a cleaned up transfer from an old videotape. The resulting image lacks any detail because you can't pull anything extra out of material where it doesn't exist. Contrast is limited as well. There's no such thing as a true black on old NTSC videotape. Sound is fine, but no better than was on the old Manga DVD.If you are a fan of Angel Cop or interested in Angel Cop, the decision you have to make is whether or not you want to shell out the money for a Blu-ray that, at best, looks like a well-transferred analog videotape. It's the best release that the material has ever had, but that's like saying, "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"

Ah the 90s. Bringing you shock value anime loaded with senseless and irrational violence to sell. Violence Jack, Genocyber; both trash. Angel Cop at least tries and moderately succeeds. The most common anime to this is AD Police, where you have a police force dedicated to terrorist by Cyber/demons/terminators? It never explains it and the plot itself is not that great. The art is very good and the action delivers when it gets going. The characters are all one dimensional, non evolving, but well animated.One thing that really confuses me is that there is not a single sex scene in this entire anime. For such an exploitation film, it is pretty conservative in that respect.For better or for worse, this is the best of the trash. This and Apocalypse Zero (Which is hilarious gore) are probably the best products of the gore anime of the 90s.The blu-ray is very clear but you can see the age of the anime, sound, quality and extras are in there.As has been mentioned, there is an Anti Semitic message in the last 2 episodes, However, it all really adds to the ridiculousness of the whole storyline. Everyone is bad, Jews are trying to take over the world, The terrorists have a heart, but those terrorists are the bad ones, Angel Cop has no ability, character, or characteristic other than being pretty; and you get amazing dialog like, "Don't underestimate Japanese Science."OVerall, this is enjoyable if you want so trash. Good trash.

This is one of those complicated storylines that not everyone can appreciate but it’s a great series. My only problem was that the picture didn’t seem like blu ray quality. Seemed fuzzy in some parts but still for the price I couldn’t pass up on it. Plus it was one of the early anime’s I rented back in the day at block buster so I had love for this series. The sound quality is great. The military action and tactics in this anime is top notch. I loved it. The violence really isn’t through out the whole series but when there is it’s very graphic. So I wouldn’t let the kiddies watch it. Overall I’m happy I bought this series.

The series starts out quick and without much explanation of story line. Picked up on things as it went along. I actually like so.e of the old school anime, this really gives that to you.

Awesome anime OVA (original video animation), as in an anime series that went direct to video.The story is very bizzare, and ultra violent, I love it! If you're a fan of the 80s aesthetic,80s anime, or violent movies such as RoboCop, terminator etc. This will be right up your alley.The reason I gave it 4 stars is because the video quality is only SD, it looks more like a DVD than a Blu-ray. But I still highly recommend this series.Very cool action and characters. Thumbs up!

川尻善昭監督の作品を色々と観て、他に類似した作品はないかと検索中、何度もおすすめに出てきたので、試しに観てみると、個人的にはアタリな作品でした。しかしながら、アニメ好きの10代の自分だったらはっきり言って観ない(スルー作品)作品だった筈です。と言うのも、絵の作風も完全に好みに分かれるし、テロリストと戦う警察官たち...という内容にも正直面白みのない、内容も???状態ですが、大人になってから初めて視聴すると作品の奥深さというのがある程度ですが、解ってきます。　敵を倒すときのグロさもすごいのです。(グロの苦手な方は注意!) ストーリーは20世紀末。日本はGNP(現GDP)でアメリカを凌ぐ世界トップの経済大国となっていた。　しかし、繁栄を享受する日本を快く思わない外国や極左などがテロを活発化させて日本の治安は極度に悪化状態となっていた。それらに対処するため、警視庁はテロリスト対策を専門とする公安部隊、特公を設置。6名のスペシャリスト?からなるメンバーで、パッケージにもタイトルにもなっている女性キャラクターが、コードネーム「エンゼル」一応新人ではあるが、銃の扱いに慣れており、(特公はテロリストなどの犯人の射殺を認める射殺許可が下されている模様)相手を確実に殺すため腹部と頭部に2発ずつ撃ち込むコロラド撃ちなる技を極めており、もう一人の主人公?酒田 勇(コードネーム 「ライデン」)に注意を受けるが、正義を妄信している彼女は聞く耳を持たないと言った感じ。 極左テロ組織のリーダー タチハラを酒田が追跡中に重傷を負ってしまい、下半身不随となり、自らの志願で全身サイボーグ戦士となり、テロ組織やらハンターと呼ばれるバケモノ級の能力者?たちとやりあう正に80.90年代の内容。見どころは敵だったハンター(2人)が次第に仲間になっていく(協力していく)。アメリカ人のロックヘアー、(はっきり言って幽☆遊☆白書の暗黒武術会編あたりに出てきそうなキャラ...)　 サイボーグとなったもう1人の主人公が自我がありつつも、モンスター級のハンターと対等にやりあうと言うハチャメチャさ、(日本の科学技術万歳!) 公安の上司、部長と部長補佐のテロリストの取り調べ、自白シーンは、やってることはもはや反社。。 最終戦、ライデンが負傷を負ったため、エンゼルが強化スーツで戦う衣装は上半身は完全に80.90年代の戦闘スーツ感満載ですが、さすが創映新社作品だけあって下半身はハイレグ型...。お尻に少しくい込んでます!!(笑)リメイクされたい作品ですが、内容が日本の上層部(一部)が売国奴になり、アメリカの犬になるだとか、アジアのクウェートになるとか、色々と濃厚すぎるこ～い内容なので、流石に無理そうですね...。

まだ、見てません。リアルタイムでは、たしか、4話分でしたか？最後まで、見れなかったのが、残念でした。6話で完結するんですか？まだ、いま、見ていません。楽しみです。これから、見ます。

タイトル『エンゼルコップ』ディスク1枚/6話画質/SDエンコードのHD画質なので、SD以上HD未満です一般的な国内プレイヤーで再生出来ます（再生環境/SONYの2015年～の最廉価プレイヤー『BDP-S1500』）。日本語音声と英字幕《OFF》を選択すれば、後は普通に鑑賞出来ます。映像特典は、海外のVHSの告知やプロモ等です。世界1位の経済大国となった日本の転覆を狙うテロ組織と特殊公安との闘いを描いた近未来SF作品…と思って数話みていると、途中からハンターと名乗る超能力者達（チート級）や、サイバネティック強化人間＆パワードスーツが参戦して来て、更には国家規模の謀略も絡まって来ます。なんというか、各種スペシャリストで超超凄腕の公安のメンバー（特殊部隊レベルならば戦力差が数倍でも楽勝で勝てるレベル）が無双する物語かと思いきや、主人公含めて全員が凡キャラ戦闘要員になり下がるので、とにかく先が読めません。ただ、サクサク物語が進みますし（レギュラーキャラも惜しげなく消えて行きます）、ラスボスのチートな能力も見る者に中々の絶望感を与えてくれるので、異種バトルやハードボイルド系が好きな方ならば、結構楽しめるんじゃないかと。評価を下げたのは、やはり本商品ンおHD画質がSDエンコードという事で、それほどのクオリティでは無かったからです。お値段の事を考えると、それほど文句を言える立場でも無いのですが、やはり本作はより綺麗な映像で観たかったですから。

内容は、正直それほど覚えているわけではなくて、タイトルを見て懐かしく思ったのと価格がそれほど高くなかったので、いわば衝動買いでした。この当時の他作品と比べると、かなり見劣りするし　多少なりとも思い入れがなければ買ってもそれほどのことはない感じ。詳しい人から言わせれば、スタッフ陣のすごさを得々と語られるだろう、そういう作品。
