Just a Fancy iPhone Translate App With Extra Steps
My family and I are planning a trip to Spain soon and so I've been looking into little translator devices that might be useful on the go and super quickly. I approached this with two thoughts in mind: 1) Can I, a tech-savvy person, use this; and 2) Can my tech-inpet parents use this lol. Answer is no to both. When I opened it and downloaded the app, I was met with some sort of subscription service. For basic services, it costs $24.99 for one year. Fortunately, the first two years, I guess is free? My services expire Dec 2026. This includes "translation privileges and enjoy voice translation." This includes 3 different functions: 1) 2-Person Earphones: Two people wear one earphone each and "tap" on the earphone to have the app begin recording and translate. 2) Phone-to-Earphone: User wears the earphones and records what is being said via the phone, which then translates it back through the earphones when done 3) 2-Person Realtime: Same as No. 1 but everything is done in realtime without needing to tap the earbuds and stuff... Also - if you want to use these offline, you will need to pay for the language pack. Just for English, it'll cost $6.99 for one year. Translation devices need two languages (duh lol), so you would need to purchase at least one other language pack. Other translator devices come with offline included. Look - the translation part of the service is pretty good. And the ability for two people to wear one earbud and have a convo is interesting. But getting it set up and having the phone serve as a hub is just a hassle. The earbuds are very reminiscent of Gen 2 Apple Airpod Pros, where you can now control the volume by rubbing the stem up and down. This wants to do that too, it just isn't as response. And i kept turning on and off the recording feature because I wasnt sure if I "tapped" the earbud the right way. AND considering that the iPhone already has a translation app that ALSO include using your camera to take a picture of a sign and it'll translate, it begs the question as to why use this? Well... Without this service, you do get some pretty cool ANC headphones lol It's not the best noise cancellation, but it's pretty good. Audio quality is decent, earbud fits in these canals nicely lol And the rubbery matte black is nice. For $50, it's pretty cool. Overall, I'm not a big fan of subscription/online based service. Having travelled a bit, there have been times where I either don't have service or don't even feel comfortable taking my phone out, let alone taking my phone, wireless "airpods" out, and giving someone one of them just to translate. Might as well just use the iphone app on speaker... I would say this is a cool earbud device with translation as a nice bonus, not a translator device.
