How long do they last?

I purchased the same product shown with your question, 6 each, same colors/patterns, from a chain store - I've had them for 2-4 years (they arrived in closed position, to use, turn to open) and they continue to work well. I bought a 2-pack for one pair of shoes from this vendor via Amazon, product had such a strong odor, I had to placed them in garage for two days. Unsure if each packaging has different fragrances, the balls in the pack you ask about was not overpowering, but who knows what might have changed in 2-4 years.

So, what is the scent?

It's kind of a fresh scent, similar to some linen scents. The scent isn't noticeable unless you're a foot or two from the ball, no pun intended.

How do these work to eliminate the odor? there's nothing in the description on how they actually work.

There is an odor absorbing powder inside the balls. It smells like a light fabric softener. You can see it in the band around the ball. They work awesome! I would have a pair for every pair of shoes if I could!
