The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: Deluxe Pocket Boxed Set

Amazing set! This leather bound set is great quality, the print isn’t too small, and the size of the book is very convenient for traveling although they are almost a little bit more than half the size of a regular sized book. It’s has awesome illustrations of maps from the story in the front and back of the books. I received the set on time and in perfect condition. And not to mention it’s a snag for the price. I saw this set in stores retailed for $80. Get it now while the price is low guys!

It’s Lord of the Rings so it’s 5 - stars. The collection is perfect for someone who wants a cool edition without breaking the bank or taking up a ton of shelf space. That said, just know what it takes to make a pocket-sized edition when you’re buying it. The print is much smaller. It’s not an issue necessarily but some readers may find the small print to be a challenge.

These incredible stories were well worth the purchase on their own, but this beautiful box set with intricate illustrations by the talented Alan Lee is one bookish purchase I have absolutely no regrets about splurging on. CONTENT There's probably not all that much that hasn't already been said about these books. I guess I will just state that these stories are very special to me and it's taken me far too long to reread them. When I first read these back in High School, I fell in love instantly with The Hobbit and really enjoyed The Lord of The Rings, but I had to get used to how different it was from the Peter Jackson films and I was not prepared for the infamous Tom Bombadil. That said, these stories have stuck with me for a long time and I got so much more out of them upon a reread. The tender way that characters interact with each other, the cozy moments, the intricately crafted lore, the fascinating creatures/peoples of Middle Earth, the rich prose, and all the adventuring in between culminates into what I think is a truly unique and delightful experience. It's true that these books don't really have exciting battle sequences in the same way that the film adaptations or even more modern epic fantasy books do, but the way the conflicts are depicted was still better than I remembered it being. I do think it's important to go in with the lens that this is as much a piece of classical literature as it is a fantasy and it is foundational in many ways to fantasy as we know it today, but it also remains wholly unique in it's own way and I really don't think there will ever be anything written that's quite like it. HARDCOVER QUALITY The main reason I wanted to write a review is to specifically talk about the quality of this hardcover box set. To address the obvious, yes, this is a costly purchase. The way I justified things in my own head is that if you divide the cost by four different special edition hardcovers, then it wasn't such an unreasonable cost per book. I will also say that I have no buyer's remorse with this. Each of the books is well constructed with sturdy covers that sport a classically simple and understated design with the cover being a solid color and the title lettering set into it. The paper quality of the pages is amazing. The pages are so thick and the font/formatting is all very comfortably laid out. One of the main highlights of this edition is, of course, the illustrations done by Alan Lee. The Hobbit is easily the nicest of the books in terms of the number of images it contains. In addition to the variety of illustration plates that can be found across all of the titles, The Hobbit also includes a variety of pencil-style sketch illustrations that add a really nice extra layer of flare to the start or end of a chapter that I was a little sad didn't continue into The Lord of the Rings. I was glad that the style and subjects of the illustration weren't trying to be specifically reminiscent of the Jackson films. Instead, I felt like the art style was very appropriate to the overall feel of the prose and there are some absolutely breathtaking pieces, especially when it comes to the landscapes. Lee can do characters really well too, but I felt as though the environments were where he tended to shine. One complaint I do have with these books is that the publisher seemingly skimped on the material quality for the dust jackets. Personally, I typically take the jackets off when I'm reading just because I find them inconvenient, but for those that don't, you will definitely want to consider it if you end up getting this set. I didn't actually damage mine at all, but they felt flimsy to the touch and it almost seemed like the gorgeous designs were just printed on a regular sheet of paper as opposed to having some kind of lamination to strengthen it or just being printed on a better material. With the rest of the book construction being so wonderfully done, it's a shame this one detail wasn't handled a bit better. What I found to be surprisingly high quality though was the slip case that this set came in. It's made from sturdy materials and sources art from the beautiful jackets that wrap around the back and sides. CONCLUSION If you are a fan of these books and have been looking for a nice edition to add to your collection, then this may well be the one for you, provided it's price tag doesn't break the bank. My experience reading through them was a delight and I am quite happy to have the set on my shelves. If you are new to the world of Tolkien, then these would certainly make for a luxurious first reading experience, but I'd never recommend anyone drop this kind of money on something they haven't read or aren't guaranteed to love. This Deluxe Pocket Boxed Set of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is absolutely stunning and easily one of my favorite book purchases. If you love Tolkien or are just starting your journey into Middle earth, this set is a perfect choice. It is definitely one of my favorite series The first thing that stood out to me is the beautiful boxed design. The case is sturdy and well crafted, making it look great on my shelf. Each book has its own elegant, uniform style, giving the whole set a really premium feel. Even though these are “pocket” editions, the print is still very readable, and the compact size makes them incredibly convenient to take anywhere. Whether I’m traveling, out at a café, or just reading in bed, it’s nice not to have to carry big, heavy hardcovers. These are the kind of books you can easily slip into a bag without worrying about them getting damaged thanks to the size. As for the stories themselves, Tolkien’s world building, characters, and writing are timeless. It’s amazing having both The Hobbit and the entire LOTR trilogy in a format that’s portable but still feels collectible. The set makes it easy to move from one book to the next and enjoy the full epic without switching between mismatched editions. Overall, this Deluxe Pocket Boxed Set is a perfect blend of beauty, quality, and convenience. It looks fantastic, feels special, and makes it easier than ever to enjoy one of the greatest fantasy sagas ever written. Highly recommend for personal reading or as a gift!

This is a really cute set to have on display as a fan of Tolkien's work and for the price I'd say it's worth it for that purpose, but maybe not the best if you're looking to read them. The print is of acceptable quality, but the text is tiny and the books are softcover despite looking like they should be hardcover. They are fairly small so they're easy enough to carry around. Again, not bad, just keep these elements in mind if you're looking into this set.

It’s a great gift for LOTR fans. It carries the spirit and the visual of a great bookcase.

Super nice little collection at a great price! Look at the tag on bottom picture!! This thing was retailing for $75 at some point haha. Anyway, I bought it as a prize for a hobbit magic the gathering draft. Very excited to give this to the winner of the event!!

I haven't bought a paper book, let alone a hardcover book, since I got my first Kindle more than 15 years ago. Not until I decided to buy this box set. And it was worth it, and more. My order arrived this afternoon and the packaging by Amazon was perfect, the books were well protected and had no damage. The quality of the books is just outstanding, fantastic covers, great paper, nice font type and size. I'm not reviewing the writing of the books, after all most of those whose planning to buy this set have already read the books earlier in some form. The first time I read these books was maybe more than 40 years ago. The packaging and the overall feel of these books is just phenomenal. Not only will it look good on any bookshelf, but it's something you can pass on to your children. The only teeny-weeny regret I have now is I ordered this last Saturday for € 93, and today they cost € 75. But then again that's the story of my life. So to those on the fence about buying this set, at € 75 this is bargain!

I preordered the set and it came, to my surprise, on the day of the release. I know amazon is fast, but I didn't expect that. How amazing. :) Middle Earth is my life, so I guess I don't have to explain how amazing the stories are. :) The box is beautiful to look at and pretty sturdy. Now, I don't keep my books in boxes, but I'm sure I will find some other use for this one since it's so beautiful. I wanted to read at least one of the books, to be able to give a decent review. SO FAR the quality of the books seems to be amazing. The paper is of nice quality, as well as the print and the book as a whole. Just like the box, nice to look at and sturdy. I didn't find any errors when it comes to the text and no words or entire pages were missing (Yup, that does happen sometimes.) The artwork for the cover is amazing and I love that the overall design of the books is just like the other 'Alan Lee' hardcover editions, like The Fall of Gondolin or Beren and Luthien. That way you can display all of them together. When you remove the paper cover from The Hobbit you reveal a book in beautiful, deep, forest green with a golden fond. When you remove it from the The Lord of the Rings books you will end up with three wonderful wine red ones. Another nice detail is that some parts of the maps and the titles of the chapters have different colors. Again, a deep, forest green for The Hobbit and a wine red color for LotR. Depending on the book you're reading, you get to see different parts of the map of Middle Earth. :) The artwork is absolutely beautiful, I don't really know what else to say. :D Just stunning. One thing tho - I read in another review that the person wasn't happy with the print and that the colors didn't seem to be as rich and vibrant: Alan Lee works a lot with watercolors, and so do I. :) Watercolor is medium that is, not always, but very often used in a way that it looks very transparent and neutral. Now if you look up the art of Alan Lee you will notice very quick that he definitely is an artist who prefers to use more neutral tones. (at least for the most part.) The transparency that naturally comes with the medium, plus the overall style of his art, which - in general - seems to be more on the darker, muted and toned down side, let it seem like the print isn't as vribrant. That's not due to the print tho. It's just the way Alan works. Simply said: It's his style. :) (again, check out his other works, most of them aren't really 'colorful' - and even his 'colorful' art is pretty muted.) :) I actually like that the art is more on the darker, muted kind of side. I find it quite fitting for the whole vibe of the story. :) So... I paid about 80€ for this set, so about 20€ for each book, plus you get a nice box. Pretty good deal, if you ask me. :) Quality is amazing, the art is beyond beautiful. I can recommend. :)

Specifically, this is about the leatherette bound pocket-sized Special Edition, as I've noticed that some reviews overlap between different editions. This is not a review of the story. Anyone considering buying this version either doesn't need my review of the books or should search the internet for the millions of existing reviews; it's enough for me to just say that there's a reason this is one of the most famous fantasy series of all time for good reason. This printing/binding is exactly what I was hoping for. The books are very beautiful in a simple way. The covers are in fact floppy fake leather, not leather-covered hardbacks. They are very soft and pliable, smooth and with a nice thick and creamy paper. The font is very small but clear and bold, perfectly legible if you don't have problems reading up close. The maps are as good as they can be being so tiny, and some details are lost. This is a set that will look great on the shelf. No gold leaf or anything to really pop out, but their small size and subdued covers that look like they could have been printed decades ago add a certain charm. The size and light weight make them perfect books to read on the go, and people will be curious about what you're reading because of how they look.

N'ayant jamais lu le Hobbit ni le Seigneur des Anneaux ne serais-ce qu'en Français et ayant été complètement plongé dans l'univers de Tolkien grâce aux adaptations de Peter Jackson, j'ai donc souhaité découvrir plus en détails ce riche univers. Souhaitant une belle édition, les éditions Françaises ne me plaisaient pas plus que ça, car dans l'ensemble assez vieillottes ! J'ai donc décidé de me tourner sur les éditions Anglaises ayant un bon niveau, permettant ainsi de lire le texte original, et avec une superbe édition. Ce coffret 4 livres Hobbit + Seigneur de Anneaux et simplement superbe, les finitions du coffret et des couvertures sont en simili-cuir (très agréable au toucher), avec un très beau lettrage. Les livres comportent les cartes et quelques illustrations : c'est top ! De plus ces livres étant des éditions de poche, restent très maniable et faciles à transporter (attention cependant le texte est écrit assez petit), le qualité du papier est également très bien. Bref, quel plaisir de découvrir ces œuvres de Tolkien avec cette édition, et surtout à ce prix : foncez !!
