From the studio behind Cowboy Bebop comes a classic space western that brings all the adventure, gun blazing action, and seriously hilarious hijinks.Gene Starwind is a jack of all trades responsible for odd jobs and bounty hunting with his partner, Jim Hawking, on a rundown planet. The work is simple and relatively uneventful until a bodyguard job goes sideways, and they get wrapped up in a fight against space pirates! Between gunshots, naked women in suitcases, and much more, Gene has to face his worst fear—going into space. The vastness of space is the least of Gene's worries when he winds up as the owner of the Outlaw Star—a sophisticated space ship wanted by the Kei Pirates and undesirables everywhere. Luckily for him, he's got a crew made up of a boy genius, an android who seems more human than not, a beautiful but deadly assassin, and a feline warrior from the Ktarl Ktarl Empire! A ragtag team for sure, but this group will work together to get to the sought after Galactic Leyline and uncover the mysteries of the universe. If they survive, that is.

Underrated space-western comedy worth a look
I think this series aired around the same time as Cowboy Bebop, which is unfortunate. Its more famous cousin received tons of attention and Outlaw Star slipped under the radar. This series is fun and most of its jokes land. Comedies often struggle to maintain their humor throughout their run, and Outlaw Star's highlights and lowlights work well together. The backgrounds are vividly colorful, the character designs are striking but present a contrast in style against the detail in the background. There are obviously some animation shortcuts at work, such as concealed mouths during dialogue. The music is fun and helps build atmosphere. I had my doubts about its space-magic premise, but the battle scenes were enough to convince me to stay with the program throughout its run.

Greetings Outlaw
The product arrived in perfect condition. Outlaw Star is a space western following a group of outlaws consisting of; the pilot and ladies man, a female android, a boy genius hacker, a beautiful assassin, and an alien warrior as they journey through out the universe planet hopping, bounty hunting, doing the odd job every now and then. They travel in a high tech space ship known as The Outlaw Star that has an A.I. that fits in with the group. This show is filled with space battle action, character development, and some funny situations. This is from the same studio that was behind Cowboy Bebop, so if you like that show and Trigun you might want to give this a shot. This comes with the complete series, all 26 episodes, and some extras on 3 Blu-Ray discs and Digital Code. The mailing process was great and the show is an enjoyable watch.

Outlaw Star BD + Digital Codes (2018) As Advertised
On the FunimationNow website, the BD + Digital Code set is about $35. I acquired this classic anime series for considerably less via an Amazon Deal. The Digital Codes that came with the discs redeem on the FunimationNow website. Enter the codes provided verbatim, hyphens and all. You need an account to place the redeemed copy in your "My Library" . ROKU has an App to access the FunimationNow website. What I like about the disc set is that the UNCUT version of the series is available. The series is rated TV14. I received what I ordered as per Prime and undamaged via USPS. The series was produced in 4 X 3 aspect ratio. The discs are cleanly mastered for both sight and sound. It's dubbed in English and the Closed Caption is spot on with the dialogue. Enjoy!

I watched this on Toonami when I was a kid.
The show in HD looks fantastic, same great English voice cast, has all the same openings, etc. If you love Outlaw Star or are looking for a great anime to add to your collection, I recommend this anime highly. This is one of those hidden gems that gets over-looked frequently. It's incredibly unique and I can't compare it to any other anime, honestly.

Excellent Blu-Rays of an excellent series
The quality of the blu-rays is excellent, and shows off the absolutely superb (both for its time and even today) animation. The story itself is solid Space Western fun. An excellent purchase!

Some aspects lost in the upgrade to blueray
I've owned all version of my favorite anime from all time: Outlaw Star. It's truly a classic. It gets you hooked from episode 1, but hot d***! Ep4 "when hot ice melts" jet rockets this anime into the stars with that good ole adventure vibe. However, that said, if you're coming from the DVD, you'll notice that they turned up the vibrancy on certain things like Gene's eyes and turned down the contrast. I actually prefer the darker blacks from the DVD, it gives it more of a noir appeal, even though, yes I know this isn't that type of anime, but the heavy shadows, especially in the opening make for some great old-school animation from the DVDs. Speaking about the art, the line art becomes jagged with the upgrade in resolution. It now looks more like a WEBM comic rather than an old school masterpiece. However, the sound quality has been kicked up a notch from the DVD. Win some, lose some I guess. This is one of the few animes where I actually like the English VOs rather than the Japanese ones.
