When Mary Ellen gets bored with her reading, Grandpa knows a hunt for a bee tree is just what she needs. Half the town joins the exciting chase, but it's not until everyone returns home that Mary Ellen makes a discovery of her own: Sometimes, even the sweetest of things must be worked for. * "Polacco has created another charming picture book featuring a child learning from a grandparent in an idyllic pastoral setting . . . Both the writing and artwork are fresh and inviting." -- School Library Journal , starred review "The newest gem from Polacco's treasure chest of family stories extols the virtue of reading--and of taking a study break . . . Like Mary Ellen, readers will emerge refreshed from this respite, ready to seek out new adventures." -- Publishers Weekly "Young readers will savor this." -- The Horn Book Review: Wonderful children's book - A really great story, with gorgeous artwork. Teaches children the importance and joy of reading. Review: Sweet as Honey! - She's done it again: Patricia Polacco has shared her gift and written a honey of a tale! Her illustrations are colourful, fun, mixed with real photos of folks mentioned in the story and sure to pique the interest of your child. The stories while simple contain a gem at the heart of the adventure. This one has a wonderful collection of folks who lend their individual gifts followed by the Great Truth from the wise Grampa! Your child (or inner-child) will love this book. I suggest gifting with a small jar of honey!

Very cute book.
Starting to love most of this writers books. I bought the one about Holes in the Sky for my granchild... for that eventuality when i slip through those holes in the sky. And because Jesus is my Savior... i will... eventually... go through them. And... Lightning in a Jar... takes me back to when life was fun and my sister and i did the same. Was able to pass the tradition on this last 4th of July just before the fireworks display started.

Great read and a lovely book to own
Starting with a little girl who finds it boring to read, the story is fun and fast paced. It makes for a delightful read! The illustrations are detailed - this is well appreciated by my son, 5 years old. He wanted a book on bees and I struck upon this! While there is a little information about bees, the best part about this comes in a surprise twist in the end! I loved it. Simply beautiful!

Brilliantly fun book.
My 3 year old laughs his head off at the bounding billygoats and the stamped of people following the honeybee to the sweet prize. Unique. A real treasure.
