Are there attachment brackets to keep the pieces together?

Yes, there are brackets that you can put in place before screwing the legs in that hold each piece together. They work great! They provide enough to also attach the ottomans but we opted to not use those so we could move them around.

Are the pieces free standing or do they connect?

Metal Connectors are included to connect the chairs in multiple configurations and to help prevent the chairs from sliding apart. Of course, you can also choose to use the chairs separately. Note: The Ottoman is a separate piece and cannot be connected to any chair with Metal Connectors.
