**Q: How can I understand whether I've found wood or metal? Thanks!**
A: Unfortunately this sensor does not distinguish between metal or wood studs. It is designed to find any change in density behind the wall so a wood stud and a metal stud will show up identically.

**Q: does it detect studs behind drywall with texture??**
A: It will detect studs 1.6" deep. So, as long as the texture including drywall is no deeper than 1.6 inches, it will detect them.

**Q: Does this work well detecting studs under wood paneling?**
A: Yes.

**Q: Can this be used in laminate wall?**
A: Yes. It scans pretty well. However the problem is that it doesn’t alert you when it finds the stud you just follow the light.  But it deep scans.

This is a very good stud finder. It is accurate and easy to use. As you move it along the wall, the LEDs light up to show that you're approaching a stud, departing from a stud, or are right on target in the middle of one. Red lights show the approach and the departure, while a green light shows the center. It takes two AAA batteries, which were easy to install, once I figured it out. It's not obvious that there are two different colored LEDs, but as you slide it along the wall, they light up as they should and then you can see them. This stud finder has a lot going for it, so why the four stars instead of five? Basically, it has to do with the fact that there are essentially no instructions. There are some very minimal ones embossed onto the plastic back of the finder. They were hard to find, and hard to read. Plus, they didn't tell me anything that wasn't already intuitive. Opening the case to find where the batteries go in, or even the fact that it took batteries, was never explained. I think at least one small printed sheet would have helped. It is sturdy and useful. And once you figure it out for yourself it works like a charm. I included a picture of it next to a dollar bill for size reference.
