The footbed is a suede like material on memory form. The upper is a man-made material that looks and acts like leather. The underside of the upper is also a man-made material that is like a soft cloth not rubber.

Is the stitching along the sole sides actually doing anything real, or is it just a cosmetic treatment?

It’s functional to the integrity of the sole construction.

if you are inbetween sizes do you order up or down?

I am also mid size. I am 11.5 and ordered a 12M and they fit perfectly. They do run slight;y narrow. I wear a 12B-11.5C shoe and these fit perfectly. Another caution; while the material inside is a soft chamios-like material, it is man-made and does not hold up well in the wet. If they get wet, be sure to dry them out thoroughly before using again or the material will tear. These are not deck, beach or pool shoes.
