An in-depth exploration of the sometimes charming, sometimes gruesome feline creatures and ghosts of Japan. Davisson illuminates the vast realm of kaibyō, or supernatural cats, with historical and modern cultural context. Lushly illustrated in full color with dozens of ukiyo-e prints and drawings. A must-have book for the Japanophile and cat-lover alike! First in a forthcoming series about the supernatural animals of Japan. " Kaibyō: The Supernatural Cats of Japan is an extremely diverting and stunningly produced celebration of the phantom feline in its myriad of manifestations―some alluring, others humorous and many outright terrifying. Award-winning translator, writer, lecturer, manga scholar, Japanese folklore expert and author of Yūrei: The Japanese Ghost , Zach Davisson is the ideal guide to this furred and fanged underworld. An expertly researched and engagingly penned text is embellished by the inclusion of an intriguing selection of uncanny cat tales by other authors and centuries’ old legends newly-translated by Mr. Davisson. The publishers must be congratulated for creating a book of extraordinary lavishness. Although a paperback release, no expense has been spared in an exquisitely-designed book brimming with a toothsome array of full-color artwork reproductions." review by Scot D. Ryersson and Michael Orlando Yaccarino, co-authors of Infinite Variety: The Life and Legend of the Marchesa Casati and The Marchesa Casati: Portraits of a Muse Zack Davisson is an award-winning translator, writer, and scholar of Japanese folklore and ghosts. Fascinating
What a lovely and interesting book. I bought one as a gift and promptly bought it again for someone else. It’s a smaller book than I initially expected but this doesn’t detract from it at all.

A really great book! Would be even better though in larger format
The book absolutely deserves the five stars. It was out of stock when I ordered it, so it took like a month for it to come, but it was well worth the waiting. Anyone who likes Japanese mythology (and cats!) is going to love this book for sure. The stories are interesting, the author seems to know well what he’s writing about.. not to mention the beautiful illustrations. However, I agree with one of the previous opinions that the single thing that would make this book even more awesome would be a bigger format, as a lot of the book are pictures… I mean, you can see all the details on them alright, I just think they'd deserve to be printed on larger pages so that you can appreciate them better.

Muito interessante!
Muito bom o livro, adoro ler sobre mitos e lendas e o contexto no qual eles existem. Como amante de gatos esse livro é um tesouro! Tem belas ilustrações também por todo o livro.

A FAVORITE gift to give to fans of anime, cats, Japan, the supernatural, legends, etc!
This author has been studying Japanese history, culture, folk lore & the language for decades & is an excellent Japanese translator. This book is super interesting & the artwork is amazing. We've given out 10+ copies of this book & it has been universally loved. Teens who are into cats & anime go crazy for this book & read it cover to cover, then will see influences of these legends in the characters in their anime & manga. We met the author at a convention in Seattle & he was really great with my kids, happy to share his wealth of knowledge. It's nice when a great product has a nice person behind it.
