No other artist, apart from J. M. W. Turner, tried as hard as Claude Monet (1840–1926) to capture light itself on canvas. 友人の誕生日プレゼントとして購入しました。芸術に関心のある方でしたら、中身も楽しめるとおもいますが、なんといっても外見がかなりオシャレなので、インテリアとしても使えると思いました。

真骨頂は何と言っても、蓮池（water lilies, pond）の連作
Taschenの25周年シリーズの中でも、MonetとRenoirは特別なサイズの大型本だ。 保管する場所にはやや困るが、専門書の風格がある。 Renoirと比べると、Monetの方は図版が小さめで、全体に地味な印象を受ける。 Monetと言えば、impression, sunriseが印象主義（impressionism）の名前の由来となったことで有名だ。 しかし、本書ではこの名作も特別大きな図版では扱われていない。 Monetの真骨頂は何と言っても、蓮池（water lilies, pond）の連作だ。 これまで、Monetの蓮池は嫌いではない程度の認識だった。 例えば、京都府の大山崎美術館に展示されている蓮池は太鼓橋のある有名な作品だが、特別な感慨を持たなかった。 ところが、先月まで京都で催されたワシントン・ナショナルギャラリー展で見た、同様の構図の蓮池には池の水中まで透きとおって見えるような鮮烈さを覚えた。 そして、本書。 今まで知らなかった、Monetの蓮池の迫力と美。 一作のみだが、418-419ページの見開きのwater lilies（1919-20）はもう抽象画だ。 こんなにvariationがあったとは！ 本シリーズは、どれもそうだが、画家のたどった道を示しながら、探求の末に最後にたどりついた場所を教えてくれる。

モネの画集(絵がメイン)だと思って購入すると、 がっかりするかもしれないです。確かに、絵はあるのですが、それよりもモネの歴史を文章で説明することをメインにしています。なので、絵はおまけ的に紹介されている感じです。 それでも、分厚い本だけあって、紹介されている絵の数は多いので、満足です。

表紙の擦れがあまりにも残念。
コンパクトな体裁で写真と文字のボリュームが十分 なタッシェンですが、シュリンクなしで紙袋の配達で折角の美しい表紙が擦れてしまってしました。 まるで中古本レベルです。

画集としては・・
解説はすべて英語。 画集としても多くの作品が入っています。ただ、488ページと分厚く、寸法16.1 x 4.4 x 20.1 cmで辞書みたいな感じなので、手軽に画集として眺めるには、向いてなく感じた（個人的には）。
