Great receiver for the price.
I was shopping around for a new receiver to replace an older Onkyo 805 that was given to me by my brother. The front panel display not longer lit up when I was using it. I had looked at other brands, such as Sony, Pioneer, Denon, and Harmon Kardon. I have an older Pioneer dvd player that supports both SACD and DVD-A(the model number is DVD-563)so I needed a unit that supported mulit-channel analog audio inputs. It was a little shocking that newer models were doing away with this feature unless you went with the higher priced brands such as Marantz, etc. Then I came across this Yamaha. After doing some research and looking around, I decided this would be my new unit. All I can say is wow, this is a feature packed receiver, and given the price a real bargain. It is a little overwhelming at first when initally setting everything up. There are numerous menu options and some allow you to rename the input settings, making swithcing between sources fast and easy. After my initial set-up I noticed a nice bump in sound quality from the older Onkyo 805. Using the YPAO microphone is a snap and only takes a couple of minutes(around 2-3) to get the results. If you want to change them for yourself I suggest using the manual set-up which allows for changing the crossover setting, distance, speaker size, etc.The Scene buttons are a nice change of pace, allowing easy access to a source without having to cycle through the inputs. This and other Yamaha receivers come with the manual on a CD-Rom PDF file. If you would rather get the paper manual you can call their product department at 714-522-9888 Monday-Friday 7:30am-5:00pm PST(they are closed from 12pm-1pm). So far I am loving this receiver(I've had this unit for a total of 2 days), and haven't had any major problems with it. I did have to rewire my two surround sound speakers, due to them being off phase, but that was my fault and not the receiver. Both music and movies sound great. Watching Blu Ray's using my PS3, I noticed the sound was cleaner and warmer compared to the Onkyo(which was a THX unit, and playing CD's also sounded much, much better. I noticed there was no tinny sound, and all the vocals and instruments seemed to come to life. If you are in the market for a newer receiver or are just starting to get into home theater, this is a great recevier at a rock bottom price. This will do what you want and then some. Highly recommended.

Gets the job done.. but not 100%
Amazon is a certified reseller of Yamaha so the warranty is legitimate. It has every codec and feature you could want except USB and network connectivity, but I have it plugged into a media center PC so that isn't an issue. I read upgrading the firmware is a real pain because of the lack of network support but I haven't tried it myself, actually I haven't been able to even get the firmware version to display despite doing exactly what is told of me online (special button combination to make the version display on the receivers front display.)The only REAL complaint I have about this product is that it will not mix the audio coming from the HDMI output on my Nvidia GT 520 graphics card. This graphics card supports all the HD digital audio codecs (DTS HD, Dolby TrueHD, etc) and can produce 192hz/24bit audio yet when I play music from itunes through this receiver it refuses to remix the audio into surround sound, just says "unavailable" when trying to change to dolby or neo surround. It would seem any PCM signal this puppy receives it will not touch only play through which means I only get 2.0 audio on my 7.1 speaker system when playing music from my itunes library. It work's fine for blu ray players and will play back 5.1 when watching an HD ripped movie in the .mkv file format using VLC media player, but it seems incapable of remixing audio whatsoever when coming from a HDMI connection from a media center pc??? Aside from this the product works as advertised and has decent Menus and features albeit no network connectivity or usb input. Also when enabling the "enhancer" which upmixes compressed audio to higher fidelity (similar idea to the crystalizer on soundblaster sound cards) I hear absolutely no difference, maybe I need some insane speaker system, I don't know.

Excellent Mid Range AV receiver
I bought this to replace a failing 10 year old Sony. I looked long and hard and read MANY consumer and professional reviews. Near the end, it came down to a different Yamaha (667) and this one. It was almost a flip of the coin, as both were rated very highly. I went with this model and haven't looked back. Frankly, either one would make a great replacement, start of a new system.Now this acts as the "hub" of my home entertainment system. Previously I had to plug all the video connections (my Cable/Tivo, Satellite, DVD player, PS3, etc) directly into my TV, and the Audio connections into my receiver. There were a LOT of wires!With this new A/V receiver, I can plug everything, audio AND video, from my sources into the receiver, with one HDMI output from the receiver to the TV. This is perfect for me as my TV is 5+ years old. It's HD, but it only has one HDMI connection. In the past I had to decide which connection I wanted using the "best" video connection (PS3? TiVo?). Now everything is connected through the HDMI!The sound is good - not fantasic like I thought/hoped. Apparently my old Sony had some pretty good sound to begin with as I'm not hearing a huge difference. It's nice to be able to customize the display for each connection, so when I'm watching TV (TiVo), it says "TiVo" on the receiver display. When I'm playing PS3, it says "PS3" on the display, etc.I got it for a great price on Amazon, and I felt then and still do like it was a great buy. I'm happy, which is what matter with any purchase, especially one which isn't exactly cheap!
