An Easy Solution
I used the converter to connect an LG smart TV to a "vintage" Onkyo stereo receiver. Optical out from the TV into the converter. RCA out to the receiver. Set the sound on the TV to optical and done. The optical cable is included and the remote works just fine. It's easy to turn it off and on. I have the volume on max. I chose the black model and it's inconspicuous sitting on my black Onkyo receiver. The lights are soft enough to not be a distraction when viewing in the dark. The sound is great. No lag or sync issues with Blu-ray, Netflix, or Amazon. It's a practical and inexpensive solution to my problem.

Great way to interface with older audio equipment.
For the money it can't be beat! Everything works "as advertised". Sound quality is excellent! The volume control was a "must have" for me, and it does work; however, the "precision" between volume "steps" is greater than 1db, so it's almost impossible to set the volume to a desired level; it is invariably too loud or not loud enough. This can be compensated with the amplifier to which it's connected, but that's a pain when the amp has all manual controls. (If your amp has a remote - mine does not; circa 1979 -, then this is a minor issue.) That said, it works well and provides a VERY cost-effective link to my vintage audio gear. Definitely worth the money!

The only product like this and it nearly nails everything.
Works great. I use optical for the input. I used 3.5mm to coaxial but didnt work for me it just made humming. Luckily most tvs have an optical out. And the only issue i have is that the Controller takes a few clicks sometimes to register inputs. It's as if the controller goes to sleep or something. But once it responds it's ok. And i hoped that there would be a more fine control over the volume. I like to have the knobs close to 80% volume as i like to have close to full control of the sound. But once i want to get to lower volumes it can all of a sudden get too quite or too loud with a few clicks, but it's tolerable. I just have to have the main volume contol at 50-60%. If there were a new version of this with those minor improvements i wouldnt mind getting this. This is still a great product by a great manufacturer especially for the price.

Excellent DAC with volume control
Very compact, easy to set up. The sound quality is excellent. The remote is compact and has only the necessary buttons. The output is not as strong as most remotes, however, the range is very good as long as the sensor is pointed directly at the remote (or visa versa). The reception angle is very narrow. All in all, a quality product for the price. Using the S/PDIF output from a TCL TV as input, and the output of this device plugged into a small amplifier and hooked up to a pair of Bose 301 Series II bookshelf speakers. Sounds great!

Perfect for connecting your TV to powered studio monitors!
I spent a long time looking for a way to connect my TV to powered studio monitors (speakers) while giving me a remote control for audio. Finding a DAC isn't difficult, but all the others I found only had a volume control knob. My opinions following are only considering the product when used as I am now, in my entertainment system... Pros: - Slim and low-profile, so it doesn't stand out - Uses remote control - Has optical-in for best audio quality - Includes all the cables you need Cons: - No method of checking volume level - Output is underpowered -- I already have the volume on my studio monitors cranked to 100%, and I still need to turn this up almost the entire way for normal volume levels. It would work better to connect this to an amplifier and then to speakers, even if they're already powered. - Remote has to be perfectly pointed at the device, not just in the general direction like a typical IR remote; not too big of an issue, though. TL;DR: Looks great, does what no other DAC can do (remote-controlled volume/power), but doesn't have much power.

Junk
Bought this thing back in Dec 2019, really loved it as it turned my bose soundlink mini into a sound bar for my Samsung tv. Unfortunately it only worked for about 2 maybe 3 weeks at best but now it no longer works, im really not sure why. It still receives power as the lights turn on on the device and I’ve made sure it’s on the correct coax setting but no sound will come out of the bose speaker anymore (yes the bose speaker works just fine) I’m writing this review now many months after because I just found this little device behind my tv and I tried once again to see if it would work. Nope. Save yourself 20$ unless you only need it to work for a few weeks.

Very quirky but not many alternatives for my LG LED TV
First of all - this unit does not amplify sound and they never said it does so no stars deducted for that. You will need to connect the output into an amplifier of some type. I use an inexpensive one from here on Amazon. But it does give you a remote to control volume. That is the ONLY reason I purchased this unit. My LG LED TV is designed in a way to force the owner to purchase an LG soundbar in order to use the LG remote to control volume when using external speakers. I did not want to use an LG soundbar with its tiny 2 inch or so speakers. This converter allows me to use any set of speakers and connect them to the TV via the optical out port. The unit is very quirky - changing input from DVD to TV results in no sound and you have to click various buttons on the remote to regain sound. Likewise when using the previous channel button on the LG TV remote. And when first connecting this to the TV, you may get numerous scenarios with no sound and then you have to click various buttons to wake it up. So I understand why many people downrate or return this unit. Yiu have to put up with all the quirks to use it with an LG TV.

Serviceable but the volume is oddly stepped.
The item works well. The sound is ok but seems base heavy. Possibly something to fix in TV settings. The Volume doesn't have a lot of variation. Pressing the volume up jumps the volume 5-10% at a time. Not a deal breaker but odd nonetheless.

Funciona.

Excellent product that works perfectly!
This product is excellent! Does exactly what it says. I use it with a tv that's connected to an old marine stereo via rca plugs. The stereo doesn't have a remote. I connected the tv to the box with the included optical cable, and connected the stereo to the box with the rca plugs and everything worked perfectly immediately! I can now control the volume on the stereo while watching a movie! Love love love this product! There is no lag in the audio when watching a movie. A prior comment from someone else said that the volume moved in steps that were either too loud or too soft. I have not had this issue. It works great!

Works, reliable, high quality audio, add remote volume to vintage receiver
My use is to convert optical audiomoutnfrom my tv to my vintage 70s receiver (Pioneer SX-626 to be exact!) -- excellent all around and love added remote control functionality to my Pioneer. Only improvement would be to decrease the increments of volume between "clicks" (levels) as they're a bit imprecise, but not enough of a problem to undercut the price, quality, and durability of these units. Would recommend! (I have purchased 2 and they have lasted years already)

Ok
Works fine. The volume is in steps so it’s either too loud or too quiet.
