How well does this unit heat a room? More specifically, how well will it heat a roughly 350sqft. space in the winter, in New England?

A 12,000 Btu unit will do a great job at cooling a 500 - 600 square foot room in your northern climate. However at 15F, the heating ability will not be 12,000 Btu's and might be in the area of 9,000 Btu's. That might be enough to warm a space that is well insulated, with less than 12 square feet of windows, and probably not a door going outside that can let in a lot of cold air. Having a mud room is nice in your area, to keep the very cold air from blowing in while you enter the house. Windows basically have a R-1 insulation factor, or they conduct heat very well. If you get a 18,000 Btu unit, I think it will provide more than enough heat for your space. Installing a slightly larger capacity unit is OK, in that the unit will offer more off time, where it can take a break on a 45F day, and only run say 15 minutes out of every hour. Then at very cold temperatures, you would not require running a electric back up heater. Then in the summer, the unit could run for a few minutes to cool that space, and maybe as much as 700 square feet, and will go to the low speed mode on the compressor and will run on as little as 400 watts once the room is close to the desired room temperature.

Depending on what state you are in, and the local outside air temperature when you are trying to heat your room, you might need only 12,000 Btu's or may need a couple of units that size. I am installing one in my nephew's rental home, mounting it on a TV cabinet, so it will remain portable, and they can take it to another location when they move. It will have the tubing connected to the outside unit and go out a sliding window. The 12,000 Btu unit will provide "Some" heat to the living room, and adjacent rooms at about 12,000 Btu's per KW of power, so that the electric heaters that only put out 3,400 Btu's per KW will not need to run very much to keep the nearby rooms above 63F. So he is getting one unit, and it will provide about 50% of the heat needed in his 1,300 square foot home in Washington where the local temperature will go down to about 23F on a very cold night in the middle of winter, but will normally be in the 30 to 45F range during the day and night. Of course a 47F day in the fall, the heat pump can warm the whole house to above 66F by itself. At 20F, the heat needs increase, as well as the discharge air temperature for the heat pump outdoor unit will also decrease, so it must work harder. At that point, my guess is during the morning they might run the bedroom electric heater to get the temperature comfortable in that room for a few minutes each cold morning. There overall heating cost should be about 50% to 40% of the amount they would need without the heat pump.

How warm can this unit heat a 300 square feet space in the winter when there is snow?

Ignore the answer about heat pumps not working below 40 degrees. These units use inverter technology, which allows them to run well below freezing. This system can heat down to -5 degrees. I've used them in single digits and they heat fine. That being said, even though the original question was quite a while ago, for anybody else I would opt for the 12,000 btu unit.
