I was looking for a camera to record surf sessions off the beach on a tripod without someone operating it. I live in the PNW, so I needed something water (rain) resistant. A Soloshot is too expensive and not waterproof and a GoPro simply doesn't offer any workable zoom. I went with this model and hoped for the best. The con: - after just a couple of uses, that little plastic finger that keeps the battery from popping out broke off. I improvised by wedging two toothpicks in. Not ideal, but it is only an issue while downloading footage and recharging the battery (whenever the battery lid is opened). Other than that I'm very pleased with it, so I refrained from returning it. The pros: - it's definitely waterproof. I'm not diving with it but crossing some streams and standing out in the rain for four hours at a time etc... - the zoom and picture quality is decent enough - the huge positive surprise for me was the battery life. It is advertised as 90 minutes of filming, but I manage to record four hour surf sessions and the battery has never run out! The screen basically shuts off after a while but the camera keeps recording, which immensely extends the battery life. Probably a different story if someone constantly stops and starts recording and the screen stays lit. So given how cheap the camera is and that it fulfills all my specific needs, I am very happy with the purchase. Definitely four or five stars had that battery holder not broken off so easily.

I had to return this item when the small clear plastic latch that keeps the battery in place broke off. I was sent another item, and the small clear plastic latch that keeps the battery in place broke off on that one, too! This appears to be a design flaw because another Amazon customer described the same problem. He wrote that he uses toothpicks to keep the battery in place. I didn't really understand that when I read it, but I grabbed a couple toothpicks and used them to wedge the battery in place while the camera charges. (Nice tip!) Once the battery is charged, closing the water-tight door keeps the battery secure and the camera functions. Every time you open the rear panel to insert a USB to charge the unit, however, the battery pops out, and you'll have to re-set the clock, etc. It works under water (so far!), so I'll give it one star for that. Also, anyone who's used a camcorder knows that there can often be a loud clicking and clacking sound when you press "zoom" or other buttons. On this unit, this noise is extremely loud, making the audio unusable. I record without sound unless the camera is on a tripod and not moved in any way. Taking off a star for that. I was hoping to add a wide-angle lens to the camera but couldn't find ANY that fit. Even with adapters. Knock off a star? Maybe. Overall, I purchased the camera for the price, the waterproof feature, and the VIVITAR brand. I wish I could give it five stars, but with the battery-latch problem, the horrendous audio noise, and the lack of wide-angle lens compatibility, I'll give it two stars.

Very low quality but for the price it is what it is. More like a kids toy
