How do you turn it on?

LOL... you don't turn it on. You grab a section of your hair, clamp it in the middle of the brush and slowly blow dry/ flat iron as you normally do. It helps to smooth your frizzies or fly aways.

How do you open it up wider? Mine won't open

At the base of the brush, where the 2 sides meet, there is a lock. If you put your fingers on both sides of the point and pull or, it should release the lock.

Dry. I think it would be a nightmare for wet hair. Well maybe slightly damp hair would be OK. Or if your hair is on the thinner side.

Is it just a brush or is it heated & is it good for thick hair

No, not a heated brush; whether good for thick hair I'm not sure. I have thick course hair at it's natural state and fine when straighten and the bristles are dense, tightly squeezed together and thick. I didn't use it on my hair because I was scared it would pull out my hair. It's similar to the brushes you buy at the store that people use to straighten and curl their hair at the same time (barrel brushes). This brush however, has a double set of bristles on top and bottom which helps you straighten your hair either by flat iron or blow drying. That is, pulling your hair through the comb/brush while either straightening it or blow drying.
