Wonderfully Grippy Handle, Premium Alloy, Great Mid-Range Knife
I was blown away by feel of the knife in my hand: there's a nice tactile feel to the G10 material and the deep relief cuts in the handle invite fingers to wrap naturally and tightly in exactly the right place. I have only a tiny collection of knives, but I'm skeptical I will find a handle that feels more inviting and secure to hold. Its sculpted handle and angular blade and overall darkness make it look menacing. I found it easy to open, but not with one hand. The act of releasing the locking mechanism to refold the knife requires a significant and surprising amount of force. This makes the lock mechanism very safe against accidental re-folding - a significant positive quality that deserves to be considered in choosing this knife. I really like it; but I was a little surprised by it. There may be certain young or old individuals who are challenged by its stiffness and will need help re-folding it. The steel alloy of this knife is S35VN, a vanadium alloy powder metallurgy steel with high hardness and great edge retention. This alloy not quite as corrosion resistant as magnacut, a close relative popular in high-end knives. The black coating on the blade, though, obviates the corrosion issue. The alloy is also more brittle (less tough) than some other high end knife alloy steels such as magnacut. The quality of toughness is somewhat more important for a survival knife that will be struck hard with other objects in normal course of work. Toughness will likely not be very important until the knife is dropped and lands tip-first on a rock or until it is used to hack away at something else that is pretty hard. I've not tested it in these scenarios, just giving my understanding as an engineer and a viewer of many YouTube videos on the subject. I tried shaving hair off my arm with this knife right out of the box. In this very informal test I found it to be of comparable sharpness to other good knives; but not literally "razor sharp."

Ten Recon 1s Later: Why Cold Steel’s Hard-Use Folder Is Still My Benchmark
The Cold Steel Recon 1 has become my benchmark for a serious hard-use folding knife. I currently own six of them and have given away four others, so my opinion comes from experience with ten Recon 1s rather than a single sample. My collection covers every blade shape Cold Steel has offered in the Tri-Ad Lock generation. I do not own the older pre–Tri-Ad Recon 1s, so everything I say here applies to the modern Tri-Ad platform. What keeps bringing me back is the combination of size, weight, materials, lock strength, and price. The standard Recon 1 gives me roughly a 4-inch blade in a knife weighing about 5.2 ounces. That is almost a sweet spot for me: substantial enough for genuinely hard work while remaining practical to carry every day. The linerless G-10 construction keeps it relatively thin and light without making it feel delicate. Of the blade shapes, I generally consider the clip point the best all-around version. It gives me useful piercing ability, plenty of belly, reasonable slicing performance, and straightforward sharpening. The tanto sacrifices some everyday slicing convenience in exchange for an exceptionally stout tip, while the other profiles occupy their own middle ground. Having owned the different versions has reinforced for me that blade shape matters, but the underlying Recon 1 platform works regardless of which one I am carrying. The Tri-Ad Lock is probably the single biggest reason I rate the Recon 1 so highly. There are smoother, faster, and more entertaining locking mechanisms, but those aren't my primary criteria. I care about a lock staying locked when a folder is subjected to shock, twisting, dirt, wear, and genuinely hard use. The Tri-Ad system's stop pin and lock geometry distribute loads exceptionally well and compensate for wear. It is mechanically simple, proven, and inspires considerably more confidence in me than most liner or frame locks. The Voyager is probably the closest value comparison. A Large Voyager is slightly lighter, comfortable in prolonged use, inexpensive, and its AUS-10A is easy to maintain. But the Recon 1 gives me G-10 instead of Griv-Ex, CPM S35VN instead of AUS-10A, a DLC-coated blade, and an overall package that feels more refined without becoming unnecessarily expensive. The Talwar is another excellent Tri-Ad folder, and I like its aggressive ergonomics and cutting geometry, but its strongly curved design makes it more specialized. The Recon 1 is the easier knife for me to justify as an all-purpose working folder. The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is dramatically lighter and a better pure slicer, but its approximately 3.4-inch blade falls below the size I prefer for this role. The Military 2 gets closer to the Recon's blade length and is an outstanding cutting tool, but it emphasizes slicing efficiency and lightweight carry more than the kind of abuse tolerance I am seeking. The Benchmade Adamas approaches the problem from the opposite direction. It is enormously stout, and Cru-Wear is excellent steel, but the Adamas is heavier and bulkier. I also prefer the mechanical simplicity of the Tri-Ad Lock for a knife whose primary purpose is reliability. Cold Steel's AD-10 arguably gives me an even more hand-filling, overbuilt Tri-Ad package, but it crosses further into the heavy-folder category. The Recon 1 provides most of what I want without pushing toward seven ounces. S35VN also makes sense here. There are newer steels with better individual numbers, but S35VN gives me a very useful combination of toughness, corrosion resistance, edge retention, and realistic sharpenability. I can maintain it with diamond abrasives and finish it on finer stones without turning sharpening into a major project. I have looked at modifications, including Snaggletooth backspacers, quick-opening devices, rings, different washers, and replacement scales. But I keep coming back to the fact that the factory knife is already extremely well sorted. I would rather retain the structural G-10, factory Tri-Ad geometry, pins, and washers than modify away the characteristics that made the Recon 1 dependable in the first place. The Recon 1 is not the world's best slicer, the lightest folder, the most fashionable design, or the knife with the newest steel. That is precisely why I keep comparing other folders to it rather than replacing it. It occupies an unusually effective middle ground: about four inches of blade, roughly five ounces, strong G-10 construction, good steel, excellent corrosion resistance, a remarkably robust lock, manageable maintenance, and a price that still allows the knife to be used rather than treated like jewelry. After owning six and giving away four more, the strongest endorsement I can give the Recon 1 is simple: whenever I evaluate another serious folding knife, the question eventually becomes, “What does this actually do better than my Recon 1?” Quite often, the answer isn't enough to make me change knives.
