Lotus seeds are famously long-lasting, remaining viable for centuries, making this an investment in a perennial aquatic garden centerpiece. ## Description Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) Seeds are an enjoyable way to grow distinctive aquatic flowering plants for bowls, containers, ponds and water gardens. This mixed-color seed selection can produce flowers in shades including pink, red, white, yellow, bicolor and other natural variations. Because lotus grown from seed naturally varies, exact flower color, pattern and other characteristics cannot be guaranteed. Choose from 10, 50 or 160 seeds depending on the selected variation. Seeds are packed to meet or exceed the stated quantity, with the 160-count option providing a convenient high-volume choice for larger plantings or multiple growing containers. Germination: Sacred Lotus seeds have an extremely hard outer seed coat that must be scarified before water can reach the seed. Carefully file or nick through a small portion of the hard outer coating at the end with the small dimple or hole, taking care not to damage the inner seed. Place prepared seeds in warm clean water, preferably around 68°F or warmer, and keep them in a warm, bright location. Change the water regularly, preferably daily when practical, to keep it fresh during germination. After the seeds sprout and begin developing leaves and roots, they can be transferred to their permanent growing container. Lotus can be grown in bowls, pots, patio water gardens and suitable ponds. Established plants perform best with plenty of sunlight, calm water and warm growing conditions. Approximately six or more hours of sunlight is preferred. Sacred Lotus is a perennial aquatic plant and can return year after year when properly maintained and protected from freezing conditions. Lotus seeds are well known for their durable hard seed coat and can remain viable for very long periods when intact and properly stored.
