It is not cotton. It’s a type of “microfiber”, not terrycloth like a towel. I think this would serve its purpose for your daughter. I have two kids and we use it at the beach all the time.

Does this fit a size 54 waist?

I think it would, I laid it out flat and it measures 35" per side from seam to seam so there are 70 linear inches for fabric in the circumference.

So soft and comfortable!

I loved almost everything about this poncho! The color was great, it was the perfect weight, it was so soft and comfortable I didn't want to take it off! I bought 5 ponchos to try and this was one of my favorites. It even came with a matching drawstring pouch! BUT-- this poncho was lacking one thing i really really need, and that is a pocket!! What a bummer! Everything else was perfect! I hate to return it but I really need a pocket. :( I'm so sad!
