An updated edition of the acclaimed monograph, celebrating one of the most iconic and revolutionary artists of our time. "Yayoi Kusama transcended the art world to become a fixture of popular culture, in a league with Andy Warhol, David Hockney, and Keith Haring." ― The New York Times Kusama is internationally renowned for her groundbreaking work on themes such as infinity, self-image, sexuality, and compulsive repetition. A well-known name in the Manhattan scene of the 1960s, Kusama's subsequent work combined Psychedelia and Pop culture with patterning, often resulting in participatory installations and series of paintings. This revised and expanded edition of the 2000 monograph, which is arguably still one of the most comprehensive studies on her work to date, has been augmented by an essay by Catherine Taft and a collection of new poems by the artist. Best Kusama retrospective. Deep insights.
We saw Kusama’s Infinity Room Installations at the Cleveland Museum of Art and in Kyoto. While this book did not document the full arc of her Infinity room series, It is her most thorough retrospective. The images are extensive with good color reproduction. And the critical articles and biographical narratives fully situate Kusama in the multiple decades of her work, from Pop 60s at Warhol’s Factory, to her personal form of minimalism marked by her obsessive preoccupation with phallus’ and vaginal holes. The holes dissolve into infinities, moving beyond simple dual sexual representation. I believe this reflects Kusamas underlying personal dissolution as an individual suffering from schizophrenia From concerns about libidinal struggles to one of merger (and spatial immersion). Regardless, Kusamas work is multifaceted and her current installations are greatly informed by her past artistic trajectory. For this reason alone, you should get this book to really appreciate her work as resolving her mental health by universalizing her spiritual quest for health. From her earliest age, Kusama has never been part of this world, yet she leaves a body of work which guides others to greater glories beyond this world. In her Infinity Rooms, this world flows into the stars of heaven, but we can only understand this path by following hers. This book does just that. It is a solid Kusama roadmap. High,y recommend. And by Phaidon proess too. Worthy of being on your art shelf.
