Balls need washing!
Well, we've had these in the pump just about one year now... We've noticed sluggish suction for about a week, so figured it's time to clean our balls 🙄. Yep, they were filthy! It was a good experiment for a year, but we're going back to sand.

Sand filter to pool balls
Very pleased with the results. I didn't run the filter system all winter and of course the water in my above ground pool was disgusting. I removed the old sand and replaced it with the pool balls and 20 gallons of chlorine and within 48hrs the water cleared up.

I got these filter balls to replace the messy sand in my above-ground pool filter. I specifically chose the blue "Pro+" model over the standard white version. The blue balls appear slightly larger with more fiber to trap debris, and the darker color helps hide trapped algae so it isn't as obvious to the naked eye. Since spring is approaching and I will set up the pool soon, I performed a controlled indoor filtration test to verify the efficiency of these balls before the season starts. I set the filtration pump up in my basement using a large 50-gallon water barrel as a temporary reservoir. I looped the hoses so the water pumped from the barrel directly back into itself, allowing me to watch the filtration process closely. During this test, I noticed how well the balls stayed in place since they naturally sink instead of floating. I added some fine particles to the barrel, and the water became clear much faster than I expected. The balls are very durable and maintain their fluffy shape even when the pump is running at full power. This trial run gave me great confidence that they will handle the full pool volume easily. These Filter Balls are a modern alternative to heavy pool sand. This 3.1-pound bag is designed to do the same job as 100 pounds of traditional sand. These fiber balls are very lightweight and easy to handle for any pool owner. They are well designed to work with most filter pumps, aquariums, and home water systems. Choosing this product means less heavy lifting and a much easier setup process during the busy spring season. The construction of these filter balls is high quality and feels like a firm, coarse cotton ball. The design uses Nano precision fibers to trap tiny debris, which leads to amazing water clarity. Using these is a huge convenience because they are compact and have a very low weight. This portability makes sand replacement a simple task instead of a back-breaking chore. In terms of performance, they offer great functionality by catching fine particles that sand often misses. The size of each ball is about 5 cm, allowing for high versatility in different filter types. Ease of use is a major benefit since you just drop them into the tank. While they require a bit of maintenance to wash by hand, the reliability and water cleaning power provide great value for money. This is a practical and efficient solution for anyone who wants a sparkling clean pool. Pros; + Lightweight - only 3.1 lbs replaces 100 lbs of sand + Better Filtration - traps smaller particles for clearer water + Durable - reusable and spring back to shape + Sinks in Water - easy to position in filters or DIY barrels + Energy Savings - lower filter pressure results in higher flow rates and reduced pump noise/energy use + Water Conservation - less frequent backwashing saves a significant amount of water and related chemicals + Reasonably priced and excellent value for money Cons; - You must remove them to wash them properly; backwashing is ineffective. - Cannot use clarifying agents/floc with these balls as it causes clumping - They are polyester, not natural like sand - Initial purchase cost can be higher than a bag of basic filter sand, but its not a deal breaker Overall, I recommend these filter balls for anyone tired of hauling heavy sand bags. They are a great choice for pool owners who want better filtration and a lighter maintenance routine. While they require manual washing at the end of the season, the crystal-clear water results are a major upgrade over traditional sand.

Listed for under $30 Typically I'd have to break my back lugging 100lbs of sand. This year, my 6yr old carried in 3lbs of fluffy filter balls. Mind absolutely blown. I'm not sure if one 3lb pack is actually enough for my 100lb filter. I've fluffed them up and dumped them in.... I'm going to be adding more filter balls. Zero shade though. These filter balls are fantastic. They come vacuum packed, so the box is only about 3" x 8" x 15". Compared to giant 50lb bags of sand- I mean... you cant. To add on, sand is only good for so long. Whatever filter media you use, its gonna get dirty. You cant really clean sand. So then youre left figuring out what the heck to do with all that leftover. These balls can be very easily cleaned over and over. I have a hot tub filter cleaner* that I'll use to give these a good clean between seasons. (*basically a long brush in a tube. Not terribly unlike a toilet brush in a bucket) Another added bonus to your filter no longer weighing as much as a small elephant- its SO MUCH EASIER to bring in over the winter. I'll let the filter drain for a few days, then crack it open to clean the filter balls. I'll move the pumps into storage, vacuum pack the balls again once theyre clean and dry and set it all back up again next year. I may have to replace seals on my pump more often this way (we'll see), but thats small potatoes in my books. For testing them out- I put them in my aquarium filter. ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR. I dont know if theres anything in them thats bad for aquariums. So, follow my lead at your own risk :P These things changed the filtration game in this house LOL. We may have been those folks that changed the fish filter once every..... not nearly often enough? LOL Now I'm committed to getting more of these filter balls because Ive 'stolen' two sets for the fish tank. Ill swap them every week or so. Ill wash a set and let it dry thoroughly in the sun before swapping them again. The water is unsurprisingly a lot cleaner now.

These come pretty jam-packed in a vacuum sealed bag and just by looking at them, you wouldn't think these would fill two 50LB sand filter housings but they do. I measured out half of the balls by weight, placed them in my filter housing and they fluffed up quite a bit. I had to push them in a bit to close the lid properly. I am a little concerned that when wet, they will compact to a smaller volume but I am guessing this is by design and will still provide the adequate amount of filtration to take out all the small particles. The filtration is very important in our area as we are surrounded by spruce and pine trees in our woods and we get a LOT of pollen so will need that extra filtration. If for some reason it does not fulfil that role, I will update this review but as things stand right now, it looks like it should work without any issues. If all works well, then this will prove to be way better than sand and a game changer, as sand is messy, hard to deal with, and ruins seals and pumps if not handled correctly. I think the biggest challenge with these balls is how often they will get fouled up when the backwashing doesn't do the trick anymore. I also wonder how well they regenerate with a proper hose wash in between those intervals. Anyways, as it stands now, I like them and cannot wait to try them out.

I am looking forward to getting the pool up and running and trying these out soon! After arrival, I took them out of their vacuum seal to check them over and they really do fluff out a lot! I don't see why half of a bag wouldn't fill my filter housing which normally takes up 50 lbs of sand, as they state in their advertisement here. They should pack down very nicely and provide a decent filter media for the pool water to pass through. One thing I do worry about is how fine of particles will these balls filter out. I will definitely update my review if I run into problems. As stated, these balls are super fluffy and expand out quite a bit. When soaked, they do look like a wet cat fur ball, so they should compact together providing proper filtration. My other concern is with how well these will backwash. Sand is a pretty straightforward set up where everything kind of gets suspended, allowing for water to push dirt out backwards, but this stuff is fibrous so might trap dirt much more readily than sand. I can see how one might have to take these out every month to wash them down with a high pressure hose (probably on the lowest setting). All in all, this is a much more hassle-free way of dealing with your sand filters, it is less messy, and you'll less likely hurt your pump with sand. As of right now, I am feeling pretty confident and do recommend!
