Frustrated
I have a nice medium sized slow cooker (4 quart) that has sat inactive on my counter all summer. I have only a few recipes that I have always cooked in it, limited because I'm a vegetarian and so many slow cooker books are based on meat dishes. With the cooler months coming, I decided to buy a vegetarian book to expand my recipe collection, and use my cooker on days when I work so that my family and I can have a hot dinner like on the days when I'm home. I was really looking forward to receiving this book.I chose this one based on some of the sample dishes listed in the description. But to my disappointment, most of them, the entire section of quiches, cheesecakes and lasagnas (which look delicious), call for an oval 5 quart slow cooker! Those were the only recipes that appealed to me, because the stews and soups contain a trend of the same ingredients throughout the book-spicy peppers, peppercorns, kale, celery root, that keep popping up in many of the recipes. Also, some recipes you have to stir or add things to during the cooking, which is not possible if you're out working.I don't want to buy a larger slow cooker. Which means I can't make at least a third of the recipes in this book. If you have a large oval slow cooker and enjoy exotic flavors, you will probably find the book useful. But for me, this book is pretty useless.

It could be 5 stars
The only reason it's not 5 stars is because many, if not most recipes call for some prep. This is not a set and forget kind of slow cooker book. BUT I think that a lot of the precooking could be skipped if you wanted (many of them call for some softening of peppers or onions and then putting them in the slow cooker, where they will get soft anyways)Bottom line is though, the recipes are amazing. Even when I have to substitute things because I left something at the store or I don't like a certain ingredient all my meals have come out tasting really good. It is one of our most used cook books now.

LOVE this book!
This book is the best. It literally taught me how to feed myself in college. The recipes are delicious, though sometimes rather similar. And there aren't any wacky curveball ingredients. I have been able to find every ingredient for every recipe I've tried, and I live in a rural part of the midwest. A lot of the recipes can be mostly made beforehand and refrigerated, and then just assembled the next day. This is the perfect book for beginner cooks who like flavorful and healthy dishes, but don't have a lot of time to prepare them.

My new favorite cook book
I love this cookbook! I've made at least 7 or 8 of the recipes (some with my own personal tweaks) and I haven't eaten such good food in years. Every single dish is tasty and very unique. I'm sure I will eventually cook my way through the entire book and love all of it.If you are a Vegetarian (or not) and you own a slow cooker, this book is a must!

A Must Have!
This is a fantastic collection of recipes that will appeal just about everyone, vegetarians and people just looking to get more vegetables into their diet, alike. With helpful hints and breakdowns of each recipe, it's easy to follow and so far, nothing I've made has been anything less than great! I would recommend this cookbook for anyone who wants to have an easy way to make really healthy food at the snap of the fingers.

Too many steps
When I think "slow cooker," I guess I think one pot dinner. I don't want to have to do any prep work besides chopping and/or peeling. I don't want to saute' or any other thing before I plop it in the pot. Maybe I'll write my own. It'll be a one-page cookbook: "Take everything in your fridge and put it in the pot and turn it on. Serve in one bowl. Voila."

Time consuming recipes and some difficult ingredients but nice ideas
I bought this book as I have a slow cooker which I love. However most recipes are for meat and I struggle to find vegatarian versions. I'm not a vegetarian, but like to feed my family at least one veggie meal a week. This book has some interesting recipes, but the downside is that they are American, so the ingredients are not all readily available in the UK and the cooker sizes are all in Imperial quarts not Metric meausurements. The other disadvantage is that so many of the recipes have instruction such as, 'cover the food closely with greaseproof paper so that the edges of the earthenware crock are covered' and 'put in a dish and cover closely with foil and tie with string'. (not actual quotes)I don't know about other people, but I avoid this sort of instruction in cooking as I feel it is wasteful using foil and greaseproof in so many everyday dishes, and it is also extremely fiddly and time consuming. Have you tried taking a reasonalbe sized dish out of the slow cooker when its hot? I have and ended up burning myself, and as the only way to get it out was to tip it sideways, some of the food spilled out of the end of the oval dish back into the cooker. Maybe I'm not very dextrous with it but it seemed another reason that would put me off using the recipes. So sadly this book will not be as useful as I anticipated, and it was expensive compared to others I looked at. I may sell it on or let it gather dust on the shelf.

Anything by Judith Finlayson is excellent!
The only reason for four instead of five stars is because, unlike her more recent books, this one does not include any nutrition information. However, anyone who is familiar with points systems should find it easy to overcome the minor inconvenience. Some reviewers have commented on the prep arrangements being too time consuming. I personally think they are well worth the trouble given the very tasty outcomes.

Great veg resource
I rely on this book for a few key recipes and good ideas in general. If you love slow cooking this is a great resource.
