Yes, the joey would fit in an altoids tin, but not the other figures.

What are their tails made out of? Are they well attached or at risk of being pulled off?

The material for the tail is similar to a pipe cleaner. They are attached very well and though my 3 year old plays with the Kangaroos a lot, the tails have never been pulled off.

Do the tails prevent them from sitting in chairs or laying down?

They can still sit down and lay down fine. The tails are made out of a pipecleaner type material, so they have a bend to them.
