Bengali (Bangla)-English/English-Bengali (Bangla) Dictionary & Phrasebook

I have been trying for many years to learn Bengali and finally this little book seems to have a lot going for it! The size is perfect for carrying. Both dictionaries from English to Bengali and Bengali to English are very easy to read and navigate AND uses the Bengali script, not just a transcription. It is complete with alphabet and pronunciation, phrases that are actually useful and my favorite...a small, but very useful grammar overview! Overall an easy to read, useful little book!

Nice composition. Easy to read and follow all the meanings in Bangla. The author proved her expertise, wide knowledge, and hands-on expertise in explaining all Bangala terms and phrases. Nice to have it if anyone wants to learn Bangla to English.

Useful book for those looking to brush up on their Bangla. I was born abroad and learned some Bangla and wanted to increase my proficiency. The book is quite helpful as my vocabulary was sorely lacking. Would recommend it and then practice with friends / family

This little book is useful. It has a phrase section that is most helpful, and the general layout is useful while learning the Bengali script. I will buy it again if it gets lost. Good Luck!

This is one of the best Bengali language books around. It serves everyone from casual travelers to people who really want to learn the language and may know quite a bit. The grammar section is the best I've ever seen: clear and concise. Vocabulary section is not huge, but basic 1,500 (or so) words clearly translated. Another really excellent feature: Thompsons' system for English transliteration of Bengali letters is simple, direct and clear! Many otherwise excellent textbooks (Colloquial Bengali, for example) seem to compete with each other as to who can think up a more arcane transliteration scheme, as different as possible from other textbooks. It is a relief to use it, as small as it is. No disrespect to the other stalwarts in the field, Radice and Dimock, but definitely one of the top Bengali books. Khubi bhalo!

very usefull and nicely presentated

I'm a bangladeshi american born in the US. My family speaks banglish so my bangla is fine, but quite obvious I'm to native speakers I'm a foreigner. I recently began learning to read/write and wanted to study more bangla. After obtaining basic bangla reading skills, I thought a phrasebook would be useful and it has been. 5 stars for doing what I wanted it to do.

I started taking bengali classes at the local temple and needed to get a reference book in order to practice at home. The pickings are slim and this seemed like a reasonably priced option to try. While the book delivers what it says, and has a decent number of words in the dictionary, I just wish there was more content. The most used part of this book for me was the verb conjugation and grammar section which is very brief and I've had issues with the bangla to english section not having common words. There is a helpful phrase book at the end which will prove useful. Overall, it's a handy pocket guide but not a replacement for a real dictionary.

very nice dictionary

ムンシ・Ｋ・アザド「基礎からはじめるベンガル語学習」で独学しています。よく読めば、必要なことはきちんと書いてある良書なのですが、ことに随伴母音の発音で、迷うことがあります。そうした場合に、本書の発音表示は、独学者にとって、貴重な指針となります。また、「辞書を引くために必要な、最小限の文法知識」といった観点で、文法概説が表示されており、これも非常に助かります。ベンガル語の初級辞書として有用です。同著者の「Bengali Practical Dictionary」、また定評ある「Samsad Student's Bengali-English Dictionary」も所持していますが、最近はこの本を一番先に引いています。

Very handy useful book

Easy to use and understand and with an extremely handy group of phrases that can be put into practice straight away. I have been understood by native speakers by reading out the phrases when they are needed. Of course it is not a replacement for learning the language, but helps enormously in the transactional level.

A good dictionary but I feel this is a more simplified version and doesn't have a lot of words you'd expect.
