USB 3.0 Hub, USB 3.0 6-Port Aluminum Hub with 2-Slot Card Reader Combo and 5V/4A High-Capacity Power Supply, Black

Sometimes you buy an accessory or a gadget, that instantly you use it you wish that you had bought one years ago. I bought this combined 6x USB3 hub with a Micro SD and SD Card Reader built in. Nice solid metal casing with rubberised base if you wish it sitting next to your computer and, of course, you can move it easily between machines if you wish. I opted for a more permanent installation and attached it to the side of my desktop with a couple of sticky pads, plugged in the supplied power adaptor, and the USB3 feed into an existing USB socket on the back panel of my PC. That took 5 minutes, most of which was spent getting the packaging off the parcel. Worked perfectly first time. No drivers required (Windows 7 Professional 64bit in my case). Noticeably fast downloading of pictures from my camera, either by way of the USB lead or - as I usually do - taking the SD card and placing in the reader. I now have an additional 6 USB connections, good for devices, portable hard drives, joysticks, or even for charging my phone and iPad, within easy reach of my chair. This is technology as it should be. Easy to use, well made, and works straight out of the box. Consider it if you are looking at a front mounted internal USB/Card reader drive bay - this comes with an independent power supply (it will work without this using the computer's power if you wish) and if your computer has USB3 then it will confer full USB3 functionality and speed to all the 6 slots AND the SD and Micro SD card slots - connection is by a single USB lead (supplied) into a single USB port on your computer. It will work with lower spec USB1/2, but at lower speed.

I often need to copy to multiple USB sticks at once, so this product looks ideal. The USB sockets are nicely spaced so even thick memory sticks go in – a problem with a lot of USB hubs – and it sits nicely on top of my tower PC. I got it because the card reader in my PC had stopped working. Unfortunately, the card reader in this device has never worked, tested with two different SD cards. In addition, although it is plugged into a USB 3.0 socket on my computer, the PC keeps telling me that the ‘generic USB hub’ could work faster if it were plugged into a USB 3.0 socket, so it appears to be working at 2.0 speed (despite the socket it is plugged into being OK when used with a 3.0 memory stick). In addition, some memory sticks are not recognised by the PC when plugged into this hub, although they are when plugged into one of the other sockets on the PC. I will keep the hub because its ability to copy to multiple USB 2.0 sticks in useful to me, but it can’t be said to work properly.

Unfortunately the sd card reader part of the hub does not work. I tried to contact amazon about this to see if the seller could do anything about the problem but was told the only option is to return for a refund. Not very happy as now I have to repackage and return if I wish to get my money back. Waste of time, great shame as the hub looks great and does not feel cheaply made. Would be great to hear from the seller on this problem.
