Review: Awesome! - Fantastic. I bought this on a bit of a late-night shopping excursion, and I didn't know what to expect. What a fantastic knife. I bought the middle size, and let me tell you this is a perfectly-proportioned Tanto, with a beautiful blade, a hefty weight, and an excellent grippy rubber handle. Aesthetically it splits the difference between modern and traditionally quite nicely; functionally, it is razor-sharp and all-of-a-piece. The only let down is the sheath, which doesn't match the aesthetics of the knife itself. It's well made, surely, with strong resists and good detail, but the knife deserves a more traditional sheath. Not only would I buy this again, but I'm thinking I need the larger one to go along with it.

**Q: Where is the magnum tanto xii made?**
A: I brough my Cold steel tanto 2 in the late 80. Yes, 40 years ago. It was made in Japan.

**Q: Any of you have a sheathing issue with the tanto ii? i had to send mine back, as it would not come out of the sheath.**
A: Yes, some customers have issues with excessive OR a complete lack of retention using Secure-Ex sheaths supplied with both the Cold Steel Master Tanto and the Cold Steel Outdoorsman fixed blade knives.  I suspect it's due to Cold Steel using the identical sheath for both knives.  Take a look at any online catalog images for the Outdoorsman and you'll clearly see the Secure-Ex sheath is formed with an "American Tanto" point - despite the Outdoorsman being technically closer to resembling a trailing point.  Both have 6" blades but are not the same profile at all.

This (cost saving?) commonality means the Master Tanto may be excessively difficult to draw safely and the Outdoorsman will be flopping loose (requiring mandatory fastening of the retention strap).

As for how to remove the Master Tanto without struggling or flailing about, forget putting pressure on the grooved "thumb ramp" like you'd expect to.  Instead, flip the sheath upside down so the finger guard of the knife is visible.  Using your fingers, apply outward pressure to the open lip of the sheath until the knife can be removed or drops out of its own weight - but be careful, as the sharpened edge will be facing you!  My own recently purchased "tight as hell" Master Tanto slid out easily this way.

The solution to both a too loose Outdoorsman and a too tight Master Tanto is to get an inexpensive replacement sheath made for the Buck Special knife.  These can be found in both leather and nylon versions, and fit either Cold Steel knife very, very well, and forever fixes the too tight and too loose issues.  And, if it matters to you, both styles of Buck 119 sheaths eliminate the "battle rattle" Secure-Ex character as well.

**Q: How should the knife be sharpened?**
A: A knife of this caliber requires a professional to sharpen. My sincere suggestion is to make arrangements with Cold Steel for this task. I believe this is free, but verify.

**Q: Is this product 3V or VG-10?**
A: VG 10/.....I did not like the sheath.   Knife is great.  Remember, the San Mai steel is a "sandwich type" steel.  Harder on the outside and softer on the inside.........

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ WHAT A BEAUTIFUL KNIFE

I am more of a knife collector than getting them for a purpose, so use is not something that I would grade this on. What would you need this for anyway? Either way, the handle grip is grippy and feels like quality. The blade is sharp and well made. The balance is just about perfect. I really like this knife and have wanted one since I was a school boy eyeing it at the local knife shop at the mall. My only qualm is that the sheath has a locking mechanism that works a little too well. It takes quite a effort to get the knife out of the sheath. More than should be required. Other than that it is a great purchase.
