Tested on a 9600 mile trip
When my wife and I were planning a 2 month motorcycle trip this year, I thought about buying a motorcycle GPS but considered the price ($500-$600) ridiculous. When I saw the Amazon listing for the Akron GPS032 Handlebar Mount for 3.5-4.3 inch GPS Devices it seemed like just what I was looking for. The mount installed easily on my Harley (Springer Softail) and I later found out it also fit and installed easily on the much larger diameter handlebars of my wife's HD Fatboy. I also purchased the Battery Tender female cigarette lighter type connecter which plugged conveniently into the Battery Tender pigtail that was already mounted on my bike.I just placed my inexpensive GPS into the case, turned it on and then zipped it up, using the touch screen through the clear plastic front to put in my destinations. Anytime I was concerned somebody might steal the GPS off the bike at night, it was a snap to unzip the case and take out the GPS and to reinstall it in the morning. I am happy to report that after 58 days, 20 states plus Alberta, Canada, old route 66 from end to end, rain, sleet, a little snow and 9,566 miles, the mount stayed firmly attached (did not move due to vibration or bumps from the road), the GPS stayed dry and nothing on the mount cracked or broke. The GPS itself was sometimes hard to read because of the sun shining on it but that had nothing to do with the mount and I could usually cup my hand in such a way that I could read the GPS. I don't usually write reviews but I thought this well made, inexpensive product deserved one and the review may be of some value to fellow bikers.

This case kept my GPS safe and dry on my ...
This case kept my GPS safe and dry on my motorcycle's handlebar when a derecho -- a hurricane-strength straight-line storm -- hit me hard enough to rip my tank bag right off its sewn-in attachment magnets and blow it across the Interstate. The cloth was just ripped away. This occurred during a five-day deluge of rain and thunderstorms when I toured the South. The case performed perfectly throughout.Five stars isn't enough. What a case.

OK, but hard to see display due to glare.
I used it a few times. I didn't find it very practical because it's hard to see, especially during the day. Forget about hearing the instructions, 'cause of the ambient noise. Plus my Magellan GPS is total crap. Maybe it's my frustration with 2 Magellan products (bad directions, maps, etc) that I'm not using this any longer. Yeah, don't buy Magellan, opt for Garmin instead. This case has an opening for the power cable to the gps, but unless your gps has the plug situated down and very close to the case's opening, it won't work.I have to disclose that my gps unit is not for a motorcycle but for a car, so this may be a factor.I now rely on my mini ipad that has gps built into it, so maps work if with no wifi reception. So, I stop a couple times if needed (and give a rest to my butt) and talk a look at the electronic map, which is far better than the old paper ones.

Does what it says, feels sturdy ENOUGH.
It is water proof, but...if its really humid ou (mid Atlantic rider) you'll end up with moisture inside from condensation overnight. So take a quick look before you toss in your GPS. it comes with three foam sheets(?)/inserts to make sure your GPS fits snug in the case. You may have to trim them to make room for the power cord unless your GPS plugs in top middle or bottom middle. Super easy to fix with a razor. The plastic seems sturdy and like it will last for what you will use it for. The ball joint allows you to position the screen where you want but after awhile it will droop. The whole mount to the handlebar is EXTREMELY sturdy, but where the case attaches to the handlebar mount will OVER TIME droop down. Just takes a quick nudge to bring it up. Mine might just be a little loose. Great product, great bang for the buck. I absolutely recommend this product.

Fits my Magellan RoadMate 3030-LM
This GPS case with mount has sufficient room for my 4.7 inch diagonal Magellan RoadMate 3030-LM. To secure the GPS when leaving my motorcycle, I undo the ball adjustment ring, allowing easy removal of the case with GPS for theft prevention. This leaves the mount, which is semi-permanently mounted with screws. It leaves thieves to guess whether I had an MP3 player, GPS or whatever mounted, or whether I used any of these items on my ride. If you need something that completely detaches, this is not the device for you. Last time I priced a motorcycle GPS, it was over $500. This allowed me to use an under $100 car GPS. For what I paid for this handle bar mount, under $20, it was well worth it.

Great set up.....
I was a bit skeptical about this thing being waterproof or not. Well I rode to Laconia 2012 and of course hit rain for about 5 hours of the 13 hour ride. This gadget kept my navigation unit very dry. No issues with water getting into the compartment. The unit comes with an insert that was great for my navigation unit as it is very thin. I was able to put my nav unit in with the styrofoam insert and it worked perfectly. Also had enough room for me to wind the extra cord inside of it as well. Also, I purchased the unit that had the cord opening on the bottom. Just seemed safer that way, but it is up to you. I know you can get these with the "cord pass through" on the bottom or the side. Also has a rubber washer to make sure that this mount does not slip on your handle bars.... great to have.Good luck!

Works very well with Garmin Nuvi 1450
Mounted in minutes on my VTX1800, easy to mount and remove the whole GPS case or unzip to remove just the GPS unit. The Nuvi 1450 fits perfectly without the power cord, but using the power cord requires a bit of modification to the foam backing due to the protrusion of the Nuvi's 90 degree connector, which is on the back of the unit. 2 minutes with an Exacto knife... done. I just finished an 800 mile trip through wind, fog and rain and the case kept my GPS as dry as a bone and it didn't bounce around on rough roads. It held the screen at the angle I placed it.Just a note on using the battery in the GPS. I would suggest adding a Battery Tender 081-0069-8 Female Cigarette Adaptor for Quick Disconnect because the Nuvi battery only lasts a couple of hours at the most.

False Advertising on Cheap cr*p
First of all. I have used it twice to get to work and back. a total of 168 Miles. On the way there. the little brass screw fell out leaving the holder insecure, luckily I managed to bodge it to get me there, the zip refused to close all the way, good job i had some tape in my bag to seal it. as the bike was parked it started raining, case stays on the bike as it is a pain to remove. by the time id finished work and was on the way home there was about 1/3-1/2 inch of water in the mount luckily my phone is water proof but chucked in a lot of paper towels just to be safe. my route home is mostly double and triple carriage way and it rained the whole 2hrs and 40 mins it to took me. by the time I had got home. had my phone not been water proof this would be a very expensive pile of rubbish that i had ordered. the ball mount will still move even when you tighten the nut to it's full extent.Summary: it isn't waterproof the build quality is shoddy to mediocre at best. complete waste of money.

TomTom XL IQ & HTC Sensation XE
I bought this for my TomTom XL IQ & HTC Sensation XE to go on my 2012 Ducati Monster 696+.The mount is very good, holds on to handle bar very tightly and didn't move at high speed. Also he holder comes with x3 filling pads, when using the TomTom I simply removed the filling pads allowing the my TomTom to fit in nicely; and when using my Phone, I fill the holder with the provided filling pads which allows the Phone to be up close to the clear plastic. The clear plastic is well made and I didn't loose the touch sensitivity when using my TomTom and Phone through it. The 360* rotation makes it easier to set it portrait or landscape and also helps to position the charging cable so it doesn't get caught anywhere during turns; also helps with adjusting angles when the sunlight makes it harder to see the screen. The holder isn't that bulky which makes it easier to install and it doesn't block the instrument panel on the bike.Arkon do say that this case is waterproof, I am yet to test it in rainy weather, once I have will update the review. As this has worked so well on my motorbike, I am sure it will work equally well on a bicycle which I will be trying soon.So Overall... It is...Easy to installHolds SatNav & Phone (using filling pads)Good built quality & well priced360* Rotation make it easier to angleNot bulky

Arkon Bike Mount for GPS
First of all, top marks to Buybits. Ordered late on Tuesday night, by 7.30am next morning email to say order had been despatched and arrived next day.So the product....Upon opening the package the mounts look solid although I would be carefull not to overtighten the bolts, it fits the handle bars snug, the pouch for the gps again feels pretty solid and it is very easy to use.I dropped a star for one reason only, that is my sat nav is a Garmin nuvi 215 and if I just put it in and zip up it moves around inside, a bit of foam and scissors and I have made a foam insert to keep it in one place, perhaps the makers could include a piece of foam to cut out!On the bike it performs well, very visible, the touch screen works no problem and in the heavy rain I cycled 8 miles through, seem to keep all the water out.On the whole it is what I wanted and thus far very pleased with it, looks good feels good and only time will see how well it perfoms.

Just about adequate in most respects
This item seems quite well-made on the whole, but it has too many issues for a recommendation. For a start, it most certainly isn't waterproof. I left it on the bike (thankfully with nothing in it) overnight when it rained, and in the morning there was water running down the inside of the transparent front.I used the mount to hold my smartphone for navigation, and found the reflections of the sky in even fairly subdued daylight made it difficult, and sometimes impossible, to read the screen. This is accentuated by the fact that it's thin and doesn't lay flat; perhaps it's better with a dedicated satnav, which tend to be much thicker and might press firmly against the front panel to spread it flat.It could also benefit from being more generously-sized. My phone only just went in, although admittedly it is on the big side (Moto G4+ - 155x80mm) - but there would be no chance with a charger cable connected. Finally, despite the earlier comment about being well-made, it does shake around rather on my single-cylinder bike (KTM 690 Duke). I found myself getting concerned about the long-term durability of the plastic ball-joint that connects the case with the handlebar fitting.I think there must be better products to do this job, and I shall probably buy one when I find it.

Bracket spontaneously broke
This item lasted for the duration of a European tour of several thousand kilometres, so I'm grateful for that. However, the holder all of a sudden failed during normal riding on an A-class UK road at slow speed. I was fortunate to notice so was able to grab the holder and pull over before I lost my phone to traffic. The item is cheap plastic not designed to last very long. Moreover, the transparent plastic covering the phone is wavy and reflects sunlight too easily. This means seeing the phone screen, and following navigation directions, during daylight on the move is very difficult. This is a sub-standard product in both its design and manufacture. We as a species can do better. I recommend avoiding this product unless you have a cheap, light phone you won't mind losing, and you only intend to use the bracket for a very short period during dark hours.
