There are parts of this book that are outdated & have been disproven such as widespread Satanic Ritual Abuse & large organized Satanic groups engaging in organized crimes. WIKEPEDIA has an excellent article entitled, Satanic Ritual Abuse which details much of the history from this time period & helps the reader to understand this man's reasoning. Today we as a nation are much less concerned with the effects of Satanism on our nation as we are worried about teens & young adults joining extreme radical religious groups & engaging in terrorist activity. That being said, this is my take on the book. This author is pointing to the parent's failure & to the breakdown of family values as being the core problem with the youth & he does present suggestions to stave off the problems before they get beyond repair. He does point out the fact that most kids who listen to heavy metal & watch horror movies will never get involved with the occult nor engage in extreme criminal behavior. In most kids recreational drug use will go no further. He is mostly addressing the problems with kids who come from dysfunctional families. He does say that kids who come from homes with an alcoholic parent, those who experience physical & or emotional abuse are likely to turn to cultic activity. Kids who do not have their physical, emotional, or spiritual needs met are likely to turn to the occult. Kids who have experienced physical abouse are likely to reinact crimes that they have seen in horror films. While most heavy metal bands are not Satanists & use lyrics & pentagrams for shock value & entertainment, they are not the least concerned about leading a misguided teen to self destruction. Having worked in a health related industry, I do know that playing with a Ouija Board is dangerous & can lead to mental disorders of depression & anxiety due to a door to the demonic that they have unwittingly opened. Drugs can lead a person into Satanism & once he or she is addicted keep this person in. Mr. Larson does give helpful information regarding warning signs of harmful activity & urges parents to try to open a dialogue with their child at the first sign of trouble. He does point out that the parents need to know what they are talking about when they are talking with their kids & when to reach out to a minister, the police, or the mental health center. Kids do have a void that needs to be filled. He encourages the parents to begin teaching their religious values at an early age. Kids need something to believe in & hope. The parents need to create a warm loving environment. They need to respect their children, make them feel valued, & take time to listen to what they have to say. Parents are responsible for protecting their kids & for teaching them what is harmful & what to avoid. Parents have got to keep the children busy as an idle child will get into trouble. He suggests that the child engage in a combination of spiritual & recreational activities. He also encourages community service. Teens need a purpose & a reason to live. Mr. Larson believes that society needs to love these kids. It takes a village to raise the kids.
