The new NLE of choice?
Bought a copy of DaVinci Resolve via a reseller in the summer, hoping to use the opportunity of lockdown to learn something new. I'm a freelance photographer and filmmaker, and dabbled with the idea of buying a copy of Avid's software only to find a nightmare situation regarding licences and subscriptions. Having spent decades working in IT, I decided to look elsewhere.I stumbled on DaVinci resolve quite by mistake. I tried their free software for months, which did its job of getting me hooked. My Mac was too underpowered for my 4K video output however, which made me realise I needed the paid version to get around the performance limitations of the free version. I've since been working my way through the training programs and have to say I think this NLE (non-linear editor) is awesome.Over the time I've used it, the application keeps getting better and better. I'm now using it on a new Mac Mini M1 (16Mb) and this application just took a giant leap in performance. Yes the application is complex, but you can muddle through it at first without much more training than you find on YouTube. The price for the application may seem steep today, but that cost includes all future upgrades and no additional fees. Thats right, unlike Adobe, Avid and everyone else in the video editing business, the price seen here is all you'll ever pay for two instances of a full studio license, on any of the three major operating systems.Application is provided on a SD card (up to and including version 16) or downloaded from the website (for the most recent version). The license key is provided on what looks like a credit card (unlike the single machine only USB dongle version sold elsewhere). Each licence key can be used for two computer systems at once (installing a third machine will unregister the first). Works on Mac, Linux and Windows. Version 17 licences won't be available until the v17 application exits the beta cycle, but v16 will work just the same (the SDcard will no longer be provided in v17 and later).Apple M1 systems currently work with Resolve Studio 17.1beta, available from Blackmagic Designs support website.Highly recommended.
