The 40oz bottle base width, (which is the same as the body) is 90mm / 3.5in

Does the 40 Oz bottle fit in car cup?

No it doesn't, it's very big like a travel thermos,I had to buy the 24oz as well but it still didn't fit in the car cup holder but its much smaller to bring around

I know the bottle is stainless steel. however are the plastic bits bpa free?

The leaflet that comes with the bottle says that all parts a BPA free, so I assume that applies to the plastic as well.
