They were visionaries. Explorers. Imaginauts. They were Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. And like the Fantastic Four, they continually strove to overcome the impossible and achieve the extraordinary. Now, the first three years of their landmark run are collected in one oversized volume. Fantastic Two
I loved the Fantastic Four Omnibus Volume 1 - it brought back so many memories of my childhood and yes, I still enjoyed the stories. I got the same pleasure from reading them as I did when I was a boy. I'm now looking forward to wading through F.F. Omnibus Volume 2...

Flame On...For A Great Read (Or should that be Reed?)!!!
Its the 1960's and Marvel decide they need a super hero team, Marve'l's first family - The Fantastic Four was born. Presenting for the 1st time ever, issues 1 to 30 of Fantastic Four, collected in a hard back book (weighing in at over 800 glossy pages!). The issues this book reprints have already been reprinted in B&W in Essential Fantastic Four Vol.1 and Vol.2, and also in colour in Marvel Masterworks Fantastic Four Vol.1, Vol.2 and Vol.3. However, this omnibus edition includes some unused Jack Kirby covers, various forewords from Stan Lee, Tom DeFalco and Roy Thomas - and (this is the most important part), the reprinting of all the letters pages! I know it seems like a small thing, but reading fans reactions to the comics as they saw print is quite a tribute to the era and the comic. So what do the 30 issues contain? The origin of the Fantastic Four, fights with Dr. Doom, Red Ghost, Mole Man, Miracle Man, Molecule Man, Skrulls (including Superskrull), Rama-Tut and Puppet Master! Add in guest appearances (maybe some tussles with) The Watcher, The X-Men (Original), Sub-Mariner and The Hulk, and you've got a pretty excellent line up of issues. So what's the downside? Price for one thing (currently £55 for the Kirby cover and £65 for the Alex Ross cover), although the original issues would set you back in the thousands of £££'s and the Masterwork reprints would set you back around £75. The other (although its also an advantage) is the simplicity of the issues. Story wise there is no hidden plot devices or super in-depth character revelations and art wise...well its the King (Jack Kirby) but compared to today's over used splash pages and awkward character poses some may find the art a bit bland. So to wrap up - great read for the classic comic fan, or any Fantastic Four/Marvel devotee. However newbies to comics/Fantastic Four may be better off with the Ultimate Fantastic Four (a different universe and set in the present) hardcover (2005) or "The Best Of The Fantastic Four" hardcover from earlier this year (2005).

The legend of Marvel comics starts here!
Back in the 'sixties finding copies of marvel comics for sale here in the UK proved difficult - as a result I had only read a few of these stories. How would my much older eye perceive these stories? I LOVED reading this omnibus! Happy memories came flooding back enhanced with a more critical look at The FF! Okay, let's get the bad out of the way first! The earliest stories are a bit too heavy on monsters and aliens, a carry-over from the pre-Marvel Atlas comics days. Also, the standard of the artwork was well below what King Kirby later produced, with constant changes of inkers making an inconsistent ride ( Joe Sinnott's inking of issue 5 stands out, shame it took so long for him to eventually become the resident inker on later FF stories, his work sharpened Kirby's pencils ( pun intended!) like no other! If you are used to today's sophisticated graphic novels and adult themes this collection of early Marvel stories may seem crude and a little simplistic BUT HEY!! That's why I enjoyed it so much - less serious, more fun, Stan the man Lee hits the spot for good old, action-packed comic book adventures, these are now the good bits to review! Stan and Jack reinvented comics with the FF, where would today's comics be without them? Mighty Marvel sprang from this motherlode and just look at the familiar names that first appeared here - the Skrulls, Prince Namor, the diabolical Doctor Doom! The Puppet Master and his step daughter Alicia ( yep, Ben Grimm's girlfriend). Also the Mole Man, Molecule Man, the Thinker, the Red Ghost and.... well, plenty more! And the stories... favourite being the two-parter with the Hulk taking on the FF AND The Avengers! Or how about Namor and Dr Doom together against our heroes? Or the unbeatable Super-Skrull ( how did they beat him then?). Get this book and find out!Switch the phone off and settle down to hours of fun courtesy of two of the greatest comics creators of all time! Hey, Stan's exclamation points are spreading!!! And I have not even mentioned the usual ( you know, individual character development, the true to life arguments etc that revamped superhero fiction). But all that stuff comes along for the ride. If Alan Moore style grit and reality is essential to you ( and yes, I read A M too) then this omnibus is not for you...BUT if sometimes you just want a rollercoaster fun-packed comic book to entertain you, GET THIS and enjoy seeing the birth of modern comics again! Okay, as Stan would say NUFF SAID!! Fantastic Four Omnibus Volume 1 HC: v. 1

The beginning of the Silver Age of Comics history and the kickstart of everything we know as the Marvel Universe. This volume is all filled with Lee and Kirby goodness, great art, and cool extras.

BEST...OMNIBUS...EVER!
I have purchased many Omnibus editions of comics (two runs of Swamp Thing, Morbius, John Byrne's run of She-Hulk, Marvel's Bronze Age Horror collection and many more) and this is THE BEST. Why? Because if like me, way back in the day, you were able to pick up some issues of Fantastic Four but not all - if you missed an issue here or there - you can now have a complete collection. This is like much older me telling much younger me, "Collect this comic. Get all of them. Keep them in good shape. Enjoy them all." This may be the best way to enjoy all of the ones you missed back in the day. You have the character, the banter, the humor, and all of the other elements that made this a truly revolutionary comic. It was relatable. It sounded like real people. People you might know. It never talked over your head even if you were a kid, but also it never talked down to you. It respected your intellect, engaged your imagination, and opened vistas of possibility for those just learning of the wonders of comics and science fiction. Yes, I suppose, there is deeper and more complicated science fiction to be found out there, but this hit all the marks. Each story is solid. Each leads to bigger and more important story arcs. You'll find old friends and relish time with the Fantastic Four's oldest adversaries. They're all there to entertain you just as they did when you were a kid (if you were lucky enough to have been of a certain age when this was first being published). The quality of the omnibus (the color, the binding, the paper) are all superior. This is a keeper. It is also an heirloom. It's so good, you'll be saving it for your kids and their kids; and I'm sure that each succeeding generation will love them just as much as you do.
