I read where another reviewer said they had to use a sledge hammer to break it up and decided to write this review. This treat is NOT hard. It is definitely solid, but not too hard. I can cut it in half with a knife. I think the little Milk Bones are harder and just dry food in general are harder. My dog is almost 10 years old and had to have 2 teeth removed over a year ago. He really abandoned eating a lot of the harder treats (like Cheweez or Chewnola), but still loves these. If a sledge hammer was needed, something was wrong with the treat or it was not actually this treat (there are other types of Busy Bone products). I only gave it four stars because I honestly don't think it is the healthiest thing for dogs to have and does turn his poo a little bit lighter in color (but still solid and normal), so I think it may be a little fatty. But what I love about the Busy Bone Dental version is that it is the only dental bone that seems to last long enough to actually work on my dogs teeth. I gave two bones a week to my older dogs and after a few months my vet was no longer bugging me to have my dogs teeth cleaned. (a process I avoid because it involves anesthesia).So now all my dogs get a bone a week to help keep their teeth clean and it seems to do the trick. PLUS they love gnawing on them. I used to buy them in the store, but they were always out of stock or didn't carry the dental version. The 8 pkg.s of 2 bones each are packed in a tight-fitting box, which is, in turn, packed into a much larger box padded with air pillows. It does seem wasteful to have so much packaging, even though I'm able to recycle .Also, I recently had a shipment arrive with only one 2-pack of the product inside the big box instead of a box of eight 2-packs. I called Sustomer Service, and the very helpful person immediately ordered another shipment for me at no cost.
