Great Japanese detail with German toughness
Great new favorite knife, Japanese detail with German balance and toughness. Right between chef knife and petty knife, very useful and not brittle or delicate, made in China, of course.

Formal and stylish
zongchuan Damascus Utility Knife: 5.5 inch: I personally give this knife 3 stars but I admit it’s due to my own personal style and preferences. It’s a 5 star knife in many ways. Pros: 1) as a ‘jack of all trades’ utility blade this knife handles all tasks with speed and precision. It’s super sharp right out of the box. It slices through cantaloupe rind as if it were only butter. It could easily accomplish every kitchen task if it were the only knife I owned. But don’t cut bone with it. 2) sharp on both sides so Lefties can use it or right handed people. 3) it has a very ‘formal’ appearance to it. A professional look that would do well if you routinely cook in front of onlookers.. 4) the brass rivet is a work of art. A circle surrounded by smaller circles in a different color. It reminds me of the rivets that can be seen on doors in ancient Chinas history. 5) the company Zongchuan takes pride in their products. Proudly displaying their name on the side of the blade shaft. 6) science and technology combine to create a knife that is sharper and more durable than a standard forged high carbon blade. 7) pretty with the look of a blade forged from a single piece , with eye catching Damascus styling. 8) doesn’t need as much special attention to maintain its edge and sheen. Cons: (strictly my opinion only) 1) it’s heavy in the handle. It weighs 6.30 ounces on my scale. This might be the one occasion I will admit that an item is better suited to a man than a woman. Using this knife for a long time will be tiring and create stress in the hand. 2) the hilt is not as ergo dynamic as I prefer, it’s also small not in a good way. That’s why I choose to describe it as formal” and ‘professional’. It’s like a tuxedo…. Looks amazing but uncomfortable to wear. 3) it’s made with powdered steel. This is the same process that is used to make hand tools from no-name generic makers. Everyone knows how durable a generic hand tool is…. It can snap right in half at any time. Granted Zongchuan used all the best raw materials so breaking is Very unlikely. However, as a traditionalist, I prefer my blades to be forged as close to the old fashioned way as possible. Even if that means they are slightly less durable and require special care. 4) this blade evokes no more sentiment from me than if it were just a screw driver. It has no ‘spirit” and no inner beauty. 5) don’t know what the ebony hilt is made from, so I will assume it too is uh…synthetic. Conclusion; Do not hesitate to buy this knife if you think it will serve you well. It’s got a great price and is better made than others in this price range. Don’t let the naysayers who like to say the word “Damascus” have any effect on you. Remember, Damascus is just a marketing word that describes a wavy style. That is all. If you like modern things, this blade is for you with no regrets.

Beautiful Knife with Attention to Detail
I’ve slowly been upgrading my old set of kitchen knives. The zongchuan 5.5” damascus knife is the latest addition to my kitchen. The size is a perfect inbetween of your regular full sized chef’s knife and a pairing knife. I really like using mine for fruit or some quickly cut veggies for a snack. Right out of the box it comes pretty sharp. My only complaint with this knife is the blade thickness which is more of a preference. With a thicker blade it’s easier to keep an edge, will hold up longer, and can handle some harder work such as crushing garlic cloves. The downside is it’s harder to glide the blade through thicker ingredients the way a Japanese chef’s knife would. I still love this thing but if you plan on doing more fine slicing this may not be the best tool for the job. This knife’s shining feature is absolutely the aesthetic. The damascus is beautifully crafted, the G10 handle is comfortable and the pin is a beautiful mosaic. The black handle compliments the darker tones of damascus. Being a high carbon knife this could be more prone to rust than your typical kitchen knife so do rinse and dry. With something this pretty it’d just frankly be rude to leave it sitting in water or to let it air dry. All in all this knife is clearly made with quality, the design is beautiful, and the details really make it pop. Not the best high end knife, but definitely fulfills a need in my kitchen all with exceptional style. As a gift this would certainly be memorable, that said, this one is mine.

Now that's a knife!
I have a small collection of several nice kitchen knives and I can say that knife is an absolute beauty. It is well-balanced and feels very good in your hand. This is a 5.5" knife so it is a little smaller but it seems great for cutting meat. I was able to thinly slice some partially frozen chicken with no problem. The knife did arrive in a presentation box (they all do) and it was extremely sharp. One thing I really appreciate is that it came with a decent sheath. Unless you plan to keep it in the box for some reason, you absolutely need one of these for a sharp knife so I really appreciate the inclusion. A couple of other things about it: the handle is fiberglass although it looks like wood. It does say fiberglass in the description. It LOOKS like it is a full tang knife but there is nothing in the description to say that it is, so it probably isn't. And finally, I don't know if this is real Damascus steel or not. I'm not sure what even qualifies as that term gets thrown around a lot. Given the price point, I would say it isn't but regardless, it does look very good and not cheesy like some of them do. But I'm not going to sweat little details like that. This feels like a quality knife and it should be good for years of use.

Does not appear to be genuine Damascus. Handle sized for small hands.
This review is for the 5.5" pairing knife. If you are looking for a Damascus knife to give to someone who collects knives, this is not the knife you are looking for. As near as I can tell, it is a good piece of stainless steel, shaped well for small hands, and treated with laser to have a Damascus pattern. As a knife, it works well and looks great; but the value for me was it being genuine Damascus for under $100. When being compared to similar stainless steel knives selling for much less money, there is little to no value here. I am giving this 2 stars for being an attractive, though overpriced, stainless steel knife that arrives with a very good edge. As long as you have small hands and do not work with a lot of slippery foods, this knife will do its job. Just don't expect true Damascus. What I like ~ • Packaging is excellent. Is well prepared to be presented as a gift. • Knife itself is attractive. • Blade edge is very sharp from factory. You do not need to have it sharpened before its first use. • Holding its edge well, though at 5.5" doesn't do the dulling work of my larger knives. • "Super High-end High Carbon" yet has not tarnished like my other high carbon knives. • Balance is ok, with a slight bias forward of the front finger position. Has a good weight to it. • Aside from the presentation box, a plastic sheath is also included. What I do not like ~ (deal breakers are listed here) • The advertising, combined with the original price, inferred this was genuine Damascus construction and I thought this was a true Damascus blade vs. just a pattern. However, the Damascus pattern does not exist on the spine, nor is it visible along the blade's edge suggesting this pattern did not come from the folding. Now with the much lower price point, it confirms my suspicion that this product is presenting as something it is not. More likely, this isn't Damascus folding at all, just laser decoration on far more economical stainless steel product. • My higher carbon knives lose their new polish and eventually patina from use. Months later, this one is still very bright stainless steel. This could be some great new metallurgy, but it suggests a lower carbon composition than the claimed "Super High-end High Carbon."
